“I want to be a nurse because I like helping people,” Milan told us dreaming of his future once he's finished with us here at CURE Zambia.

Milan is 17 years old and has had to deal with two clubfeet since the day he was born. His life has not been short of challenges due to his condition. “I can’t walk a long distance. If I do, my legs feet start hurting. I can't wear shoes. I can’t even manage to help with house chore or work in fields,” shares Milan. He has simple dreams of being able to walk without pain and wear shoes like everyone else.

Several years ago, Milan and his family learned that clubfoot is a medically treatable condition and went to the closest hospital. Unfortunately, they were turned away saying his feet were too far gone for this hospital to help them. They went home dejected but thankfully Milan is surrounded by a good and supporting community who helped them through this time.

It wasn't until earlier this year when Milan was walking through a market when the wife of our Spiritual Director saw him and told him to come see us. Now that Milan is here, we will straighten his feet and get him walking without pain, wearing shoes, and taking the first steps towards one day becoming a nurse!

The place were the playroom is located in the children's ward is has been closed because of the renovations taking place in that part of the ward. Thankfully, when our outpatient department was expanded last year and a playroom was included in the design. The kids from the ward are now making use of it as their playroom temporarily! Regardless of changes in the infrastructure of the hospital, play and healing for kids continues. As part of his post-op rehabilitation Milan was part of kids in our playroom today! Photo of Milan
