Untreated Trauma

Broken bones are relatively common worldwide, but access to comprehensive medical care is not. In countries where CURE serves, access to surgical care is limited, and the child may not receive the care they need. In some situations, children don’t receive treatment for their broken bones until years after the initial break or don’t receive treatment at all.

What issues do children with untreated trauma face?

Broken bones left untreated can cause pain, limit mobility, and bring ridicule.

Pain

Genu valgum causes pain in the knee, hips, and ankle joints.

Untreated broken bones are often painful.

Discrimination

Children with frequent broken bones are often left out of activities and vulnerable to bullying and exclusion.

Limited Mobility

Children may lose functionality and their ability to move independently, preventing them from attending school.

Treatment

Treatment for untreated broken bones depends on the severity and the amount of time the injury went without treatment.

Surgery is generally required to straighten the bone. Sometimes, surgeons may need to lengthen the bone to equalize the child’s limbs. Infection management is also an important part of surgical care.

Yetbarek | CURE Ethiopia

Before Surgery

Yetbarek is an active boy who loves soccer. His days running and playing came to an end when a broken bone healed incorrectly, limiting his mobility.

After Surgery

CURE surgically repaired Yetbarek’s leg, and our team of physical therapists was there for every step in his healing journey. Today, his leg is healed and he’s walking toward a bright future.
