“Back at home people said that it would be impossible for Hassan to get healed. I was very worried too but when I got to CURE I saw children in even worse conditions and they are being treated so I became stronger and I feel that he will be healed,” said Jalia. Hassan developed hydrocephalus when he was just six months old, he was taken first to a clinic then to a government hospital where he received different forms of treatment but unfortunately when he didn’t improve at all, one doctor referred him to CURE Hospital. He is now at CURE with his twin brother Hussein and their older sister Haula. According to Jalia, Haula and the twins are really close. Since Haula is in her school break, she asked to accompany Hassan and Hussein to hospital. Before Hassan got sick he was developing normally and was even crawling before his brother Hussein but now, he has deteriorated and cannot even sit, yet Hussein is now walking. Both Jalia and her husband Sulaiman are peasant farmers from a small town in southern Uganda, they have a total of eight children who are all healthy apart from Hassan.

Hassan was discharged home over the weekend and we will see him again at a follow up clinic at the end of the month. Please keep Hassan in your prayers that he will recover well from his operation!

“I’m fine, but (Hassan) had fevers in the night. He loves to breastfeed, but vomits right after,” said Jalia. During the night, Hassan’s brother Hussein also had a rough time with an upset stomach. Jalia has confidence in the medical team. She has been impressed by the treatment her family has received. Hassan's doctor's main concerns are his fevers and vomiting. Once his fever breaks and vomiting stops, they will be able to go home. Today, Dr. Justin removed Hassan's bandage. The wound site is looking good. Back home, Jalia’s other children are doing well. She is not very worried about them. The oldest is 20 years old and the youngest is 10 years old. She was able to bring her youngest child with her. As Hassan improves from surgery, Jalia has been thinking about the future, “I want them (Hassan and Hussein) to study and to get jobs,” she said. Please be praying for Hassan and Hussein to both feel better and for them to be discharged soon. Photo of Hassan

“I am now okay. I was worried the baby wouldn’t come out of theater yesterday. My family called every hour as if they were expecting bad news,” said Jalia. Hassan is recovering from surgery. He had a fever last night that spiked at 101 degrees fahrenheit. Today his fever has gone down and he is being moved to the ward. Yesterday Hassan’s brother, Hussein, was sick with an upset stomach. He was given medicine and is improving. Julia was concerned that he too would develop hydrocephalus so she asked the doctors to examine him. They told her he has no signs of the condition which was a relief to Julia. Please be praying for Hassan to make a full recovery and for them to be able to go home soon. Photo of Hassan

“I’m worried because those at home told me the child would not wake up from the anesthesia. I was always hesitant because of the fear,” said Jalia. “Even if it means dying, he will die in the hands of the doctors and not in the village,” she continued. Today Hassan has gone in to surgery. Dr. Justin performed an ETV/CPC. Hassan is now awake from the surgery and is in the PACU. He will soon be transferred to the ICU where he will spend the night. Please be praying for Hassan that his operation will be successful and for him to make a full recovery. Photo of Hassan

Hassan was admitted to the hospital today. He had a CT-scan, blood work, and a cerebrospinal fluid analysis. His doctors are now making a plan for his surgery. His mother, Jalia, and him attended the afternoon chapel service. Please be praying for Hassan and his family as they get settled into the ward and for him to have a successful operation.
