“Nurses were very scared when they saw my baby’s condition; it made me feel like I had given birth to something unusual,” said Sam’s mother, Esther.
Sam, Esther’s one-month-old son, was born with encephalocele, a rare condition in which part of the brain protrudes outside the skull in a sac-like formation. If left untreated, encephalocele can lead to severe complications, including infections, neurological problems, or even death.
While Esther was pregnant, she diligently attended all her maternity visits. At nine months, doctors conducted an ultrasound to assess how to deliver the baby safely. The scan showed that the baby’s neck was surrounded by the umbilical cord, though the details were not entirely clear.
The day of delivery arrived, and complications arose during labor. The midwives noticed something unusual and asked Esther to stop pushing. “They thought the uterus was coming out. They were so worried. They hurriedly called other nurses for support, but no one knew how to help. They recommended a C-section,” Esther recounted.
During the operation, the doctors realized it was not the uterus but a swelling caused by the encephalocele—a condition they had never encountered before. After delivery, the doctors referred Esther and Sam to another hospital for specialized care. “We were referred to the city, where we stayed in the hospital for one week. All they asked for was money for treatment, and we soon ran out, even struggling for basic upkeep,” Esther said. One morning, a doctor asked them to pay Shs 2 million for surgery. “When I heard this, I thought, let me take my baby home to die rather than stay in the hospital. We could not even afford a quarter of the amount,” she tearfully recalled.
In despair, another mother with a baby who had been treated at CURE Uganda noticed Sam and told Esther about the hospital, which specializes in such conditions. “This was a relief. I did not know what to say except to thank God, and I hurriedly came. We are grateful to God for seeing us through that moment,” Esther said.
Thank you so much for sponsoring baby Sam’s surgery. Your generosity gives him hope and a chance at a healthy life.
Join us in welcoming baby Sam and his mom, Esther, to CURE Uganda!
Baby Sam was born with a rare condition called encephalocele, which made his early days very challenging. His mother, Esther, faced fear and uncertainty as nurses and doctors were unsure how to help. Despite attending all her prenatal visits and following medical advice, she encountered extreme challenges during delivery and afterward, including hospitals asking for money she could not afford. At one point, she felt helpless and considered taking her baby home without care.
Through God’s provision and the guidance of another mother, Esther learned about CURE Uganda. Today, Sam is receiving the specialized care he needs, and his mother is grateful for the hope and support provided. Esther’s story is a powerful reminder that, even in the most difficult circumstances, God does not abandon us, and with compassionate care, children like Sam can receive life-changing treatment.
Baby Sam underwent a life-changing surgery to treat his condition. The procedure, called “Repair of encephalocele, skull vault, including cranioplasty, laterality,” carefully corrected the sac-like protrusion of brain tissue through his skull. The surgeons reconstructed the affected part of the skull to protect his brain and performed a cranioplasty to reshape and reinforce the skull, ensuring it is strong and stable. The term “laterality” refers to the specific side of the skull where the repair was done.
Thanks to this surgery, Sam now has a safely protected brain and a stable skull structure, giving him a real chance to grow, develop, and thrive. With ongoing care, he now has hope for a healthy future. Thank you for your prayers and support in making this life-changing procedure possible.
Everyone was amazed by Sam’s recovery! Fellow moms in the ward were delighted to see him looking so much better. For the family, especially Mommy Esther, it has been a huge relief.
“He used to sleep on one side only, but now he sleeps comfortably. I am so happy about this great change. My child will live and be happy too,” Esther said.
Sam is still in the ward receiving post-surgery care. Thank you for your prayers so far. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts as he recovers fully.
During our recent 25th anniversary celebration and the reopening of the new surgical center, Sam’s mom, Esther, was given a special opportunity to share her journey.
Standing before many, she spoke from the heart, saying, “When my child fell sick, I did not know where to turn. The journey has been long, and there were moments I feared I might lose him. But God opened a door for us here. Through the care we received and the kindness of people we have never met, my child has been given a chance to live. I will never forget what has been done for us.”
Her words moved many in the room. There was a deep sense of reflection and gratitude as people listened—not only to her story, but to the countless stories like Sam’s that speak to the life-changing work being done every day.
Guests were truly inspired, witnessing firsthand how compassion, skill, and generosity come together to bring healing and hope. The impact of the work being done at CURE Uganda was evident not just in numbers and milestones, but also in the lives of children like Sam and in the voices of families who have walked this journey.
Thank you for being part of this mission and for helping make stories like Sam’s possible.
Pre Surgery Care
20 Apr 2026
In the past weeks, Sam has been on a long, delicate recovery journey after his earlier surgery. He developed a condition where fluid accumulates in the brain. Doctors have been managing this while preparing him for the next treatment. He already had a procedure to clear fluid spaces in his brain, reducing infection and improving his condition. He is on medication as he waits for the next procedure to drain the fluid more permanently.
We are encouraged by how well Sam is doing at the moment. He has remained stable, with no fever, seizures, or vomiting. He is breastfeeding well and continues to show strength, with his body functioning normally. On examination, he is alert and active, and his surgical site is clean and healing well. Recent tests show no active infection, which is a positive sign as the team prepares for the next stage of care.
For now, the doctors have advised continuing his current care, keeping him under close observation, and preparing for the upcoming procedure that will further support his healing.
Sam’s journey has not been easy, but through it all, we see God’s hand at work. We are deeply thankful for your continued prayers, patience, and generosity. You have stood with him through every step, and your support is making this journey possible.
Sam underwent another procedure, ventricular irrigation.
This procedure involves gently washing and clearing the fluid spaces inside the brain. It is done to remove any remaining infection, debris, or fluid buildup, helping create a cleaner, safer environment for the brain to heal. This step is especially important because it reduces the risk of ongoing infection and prepares Sam’s body for the next stage of treatment.
We are grateful that the procedure went well, and Sam is currently stable as he continues to be closely monitored by the medical team.
Looking ahead, Sam is still awaiting another procedure that will help manage and drain the fluid in his brain more permanently. This next step will be key to supporting his long-term recovery and improving his quality of life.
Sam’s journey continues to require patience, care, and faith, but we remain hopeful as we see progress along the way. Thank you for standing with him through each stage—your support is truly making a difference.
While in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Sam has remained stable under close monitoring. This is an encouraging sign in his recovery. By God’s grace, he is now ready to move from the ICU to the general ward, where he will continue to receive medication and care as he prepares for his next surgery.
His mother, Esther, shared, “Seeing my baby improve gives me strength. The ICU was very hard for me as a mother, but God has been faithful. I am thankful for every step forward and for everyone helping my child get better.”
As Sam moves to the ward, the medical team will continue to monitor him, ensuring he remains strong for his upcoming procedure.
Thank you for your prayers and support. They mean so much to Sam and his family.
