About Richard
In a society where fuel shortages are all too common and the majority of the people are too impoverished to afford their own personal forms of transportation and sometimes even mass transit, the ability to walk is one of the most precious things a person can possess. People walk everywhere here and a lot of them walk barefooted amongst the broken glass and rocks on the sides of the roads, going to and from places of business in order to sustain themselves and their families. What happens to those who do not have the ability to walk, for those like seventeen-year-old Richard Tomasi for whom walking is a dream and a luxury?
The youngest in a family of five, Richard was already mobilely challenged when he was born, as he had an extremely short right leg which had to be amputated. His situation worsened at the age of five when the one leg he had began to curve like an arch in the lower portion. For this he was treated by CURE two years ago, having a rod put in his leg to straighten it. The kid cannot catch a break though, as the leg has regressed to its formerly bent state and he is having a more difficult time than ever because of his pesky condition.
Richard’s situation is complicated by the fact that it has rendered him a burden to his family who is already stretched to their limits. His widowed mother supports her family the best she can by doing piecework and subsistence farming, which Richard cannot participate in due to his condition. He was forced to drop out of school, as he could not make the long journey there. He does his best to move around on crutches, but can often be seen crawling around to get from place to place. This is a tough situation for a seventeen-year-old to handle as he sees all of his friends walking and running with ease and he is often left behind, unable to keep up with them. Thankfully Richard remains determined despite his current position, and has come back to CURE, unwilling to accept that he will have to remain like he is, forever. We will do the best we can, medically, to make Richard as mobile and normal as possible, and we ask that you all do the best you can in praying for him in order to enliven his spirit that he may realize, whether he is walking or crawling, he is doing so with the God of Heaven and earth on his side.
