About Isabel
Wrong diagnoses have cost Isabel a lot of pain & discomfort, not to mention a few kicks to her self-esteem. When she was just five years old, she became sickly, and while in the hospital, doctors couldn’t quite place a finger on what the problem was. Their solution? Give her painkillers and send her home. At home, her dad Phabian observed that there was no improvement in his daughter’s condition. He went out in search of a second opinion and was told his daughter was suffering from malaria. She was put on a drip, given malaria meds, then sent home. How the problem changed from malaria to juvenile arthritis is still a mystery to Phabian. By the time they were out searching for a third opinion, it was apparent that one of Isabel’s legs was shorter than the other.
Thankfully, Isabel’s condition stabilized once she began using the arthritis medication. She has now been on the medication for about four years, and though she does not complain of pain as much as before, the difference in length between her legs continues to increase. With her left leg increasing in length, she began to use shoe raises (basically a platform shoe worn to even out her walk). So far she has had the raise changed twice, and during our visit to her home area, she was fitted for her third. “This shoe raise is too high. I am afraid she will start to loose balance. I think she needs to use crutches now. I even have to help her tie the laces or even then she might lose balance and fall,” Phabian told me when he saw Isabel walking in the new shoe raise. I completely agreed. Isabel walked as though she would topple over with the slightest miscalculation of her steps.
When she comes to CURE in March, the doctors will have decided on the best mode of treatment for her, which will likely involve manipulating her bones to encourage lengthening. I am sure whatever they will agree on will be better than the overbearing shoe raise that she has struggled with for the past couple of years. My prayer now is that God will bless Phabian & Isabel’s efforts in trying to find better treatment, and that He’ll use us as that blessing.

Day 95 Isabel showing our Dr. Kinyua how she has been lengthening the external-fixator :) She has thus far gained 3.5cm in length and the process continues... We do not know the exact date when we will see her again as it is dependent on the bone lengthening process, but hopefully it will be sometime before July. Please be praying that the process continues on as planned. http://bit.ly/IGqono

Day 56 All smiles as usual :) Doctors have been turning the key on her external fixator daily, and since she's been adjusting well, they're thinking of discharging her tomorrow morning! http://bit.ly/GXeqGi

Day 52 Isabel is doing great this morning! After rounds this morning, doctors made the plan to start turning her external fixator tomorrow to begin the slow and steady bone lengthening process. http://bit.ly/GQMvua

Day 48 It was a long operation, but with great results to show for it! Doctors used a C-arm X-ray machine to take pictures throughout the procedure, guiding them in their placement of the pins they drilled into her hip and femur. They also separated two parts of her bone so that they'll heal in a new, correct position thanks to the support of the external fixator device they assembled. Now I'm just praying for a smooth start to her recovery, and I hope you are too :) http://bit.ly/GGvDr1

Day 48 Woo hoo! Guess who's finally headed into surgery...now, she doesn't look quite as amused as our anesthetist, but operating rooms don't usually have that effect on kids. Prayers please! http://bit.ly/GGZ1OU
