About Teresia
Her mother, Nelly, refers to Teresia as “the silent criminal”. Well, I could almost agree with her. Teresia is the kind of child who looks quiet, but given enough time, she opens up and you realize that there is more to her than meets the eye. However, Nelly confesses that she has never had a chance to be close to her daughter, saying, “I don’t know why she refuses to talk when I am around.” As a result, I actually had to split our little interview into two, one with Nelly and one with Teresia.
Nelly knows that her daughter got hurt while fetching firewood sometime last year. She’s not sure of the details though because her daughter kept the incident to herself until the pain from the injury was too much to bear. Nelly admitted that she’s still a bit disturbed that Teresia did not find it necessary to tell her, which is still a mystery.
When I finally got to talk to Teresia alone, my first question was why she did not tell her mother when the injury happened. And almost as if to confirm her mother’s words, she didn’t answer me but just looked down and smiled shyly. But with time, I was able to start getting some general information from her, but it’s clear that her limitations are not only physical but relational as well. For Nelly, her prayers are two fold: one, that her daughter will get the physical healing she needs, and two, that their relationship will get the emotional healing it needs. So although we get the chance to help with the first desire, I really hope their time together at our hospital will foster a cure for the second.
