About Getanew
Getanew giggled a lot during our interview. That's sort of a funny description for 20 year old male, but he was so sweet that I think it's worthy of mentioning. He smiled the entire time we talked. When I told him that I'm only 2 years older than him, he seemed to think that was hilarious.
For someone with such a great attitude, it's hard to believe that he has such a debilitating bone disease. This disease causes the bones in his limbs to become deformed. He has already had his first operation, but the doctors expect there to be at least one more to correct his other leg. After that surgery, Getanew may choose to have both of his arms straightened as well. For him, that may be an easy decision because as of now he cleans shoes for a living, and that is a hard job to do when your arms are not working correctly.
I asked Getanew what he wants to do when his bones are fixed. His wish is to play soccer and run and "do everything that everybody does." When he graduates from school he wants to plant trees and fruit.
