Changing Lives Since 1998

CURE Kenya was Africa’s first pediatric orthopedic teaching hospital when it opened in Kijabe in 1998. Each year it performs over 3,200 life-changing reconstructive and orthopedic surgeries for children suffering from treatable disabilities. The teaching hospital has 56 beds and three operating rooms. CURE International uses this facility as a regional learning facility by partnering with the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA) to implement an orthopedic pediatric training program at the residency and fellowship levels. In addition to world-class clinical service, CURE Kenya ministers to the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their communities. The African Inland Church (AIC) provided the initial land for the hospital premise as a gift to the people of Kenya.

Maryanne | Windswept Legs

Before Surgery

When Maryanne developed windswept legs, it prevented her from walking normally and drew ridicule from her community. Her mom feared nothing could be done, until they received a referral to CURE.

After Surgery

Kennedy Gichira

Programs and Development Director

Dr. Kennedy serves as the Programs and Development Director at CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya, where he is responsible for business advancement through partnerships and program management.

Dr. Kennedy holds a PhD in business management from Chuka. He also has a bachelor’s degree from Kenyatta University and a master’s degree in community development from the University of Nairobi.

In addition to working for various nonprofit organizations in Eastern Africa, Dr. Kennedy spent over 10 years as an executive director at Anglican Development Services Kenya. He is excited to be at CURE Kenya sharing the love of Christ and transforming kids’ lives.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Kennedy loves spending time with his family, serving at his local church, and volunteering in nonprofit organizations.

Victor Mose

Spiritual Director

Victor serves as spiritual director for AIC-CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya. In his role, he provides spiritual care to CURE staff, oversees spiritual outreach events in the community, and ensures that proper spiritual patient care emanates from every discipline within the hospital. He also establishes and models standards of Christian conduct for CURE staff, patients, patient families, and the community the hospital serves.

Since 2001, Victor has served as a local pastor in the Kisii region. He has also worked as the principal of a Bible training center and chaplain of an academy. Victor holds a diploma in Bible and pastoral ministries from Pwani Bible Institute and a bachelor’s degree in Bible and theology from Africa Theological Seminary.

In his personal time, Victor is a gospel artist and has recorded two albums, with more than 20 songs. He is married to Rose Rabera, and they have two sons: Alfa and Ebenezer.



Nelson Muoki

Executive Director

Nelson currently serves as the Executive Director of CURE Kenya, where he maintains overall accountability for the hospital’s operational, financial, spiritual, and clinical well-being.

In 2015, he began his career at the CURE hospital in Kenya as a CUREkids Coordinator before serving in a variety of other roles, including Donor Facilitation Manager, Programs and Development Director, and Capital Projects Coordinator.

Nelson has a bachelor’s degree in telecommunication engineering from Makerere University in Uganda and an MBA from Strathmore University in Kenya. He is also a Certified Financial Analyst and Project Management Professional.

Driven by his passion for serving God and making a difference, Nelson finds profound motivation in witnessing CURE’s transformative impact, both spiritual and physical, on families.

Outside of work, he enjoys exploring the outdoors, running, hiking, and spending time with family. He’s married to Christine, and they have three children: Adia, Amari, and Aila.

Naomi Njeri Mwangi

Facility Director

Naomi serves as Facility Director at CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya, where she ensures all hospital buildings and equipment systems are safe and functional.

She has a bachelor’s degree in health system management from Kenya Methodist University Nairobi.

Outside of serving CURE, she enjoys doing charitable work and spending time with her friends and family, including her husband, David, and her children, Paula and John.

Lydia Nyambane

Director of Nursing

Lydia serves as Nursing Director at CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya, where she directs nursing services across the hospital while ensuring excellent patient safety.

She has a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Nairobi and a postgraduate diploma in human resource management.

Working for CURE has given Lydia a chance to be surrounded by like-minded people whose sole purpose is to help children with disabilities improve their quality of life.

Away from her nursing duties, Lydia enjoys traveling to different countries and experiencing other cultures.

Elizabeth Shonko

Director of Quality

Elizabeth serves as the quality and patient safety director at CURE Kenya. She ensures the provision of efficient and effective leadership in quality improvement and patient safety.

Trained at Kijabe College of Health Sciences, Elizabeth has been a nurse for over 30 years, including ten years at CURE Kenya. She has worked as a deputy nurse in charge, maternity nurse in charge, quality manager, and acting nursing director. She enjoys coming to work every day at CURE and seeing patients achieving something they could not do before, like wearing a shoe or holding a pen.

Outside of work, Elizabeth enjoys counseling families with people living with disability, participating in youth and women’s ministry, singing, and spending time with her family.

Elizabeth is married to John, and together they have three children—Elvis, Stephen, and Zawadi; one daughter-in-law, Joyce; and one grandson, Leiyan.

Dr. Joseph Theuri

Medical Director

Since 2011, Dr. Joseph Theuri has served as the Medical Director of CURE Kenya, where he manages the day-to-day operations of surgery and treatment for patients at the hospital.

Dr. Theuri received his bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Nairobi and completed his internship at AIC Kijabe Mission Hospital. In 1998, he joined CURE Kenya as the hospital’s first clinical resident, where he was trained and mentored by CURE Kenya’s medical director at the time, Dr. Tim Mead. At the time, the only real orthopedic training program for the region was in Uganda, so in 2000, CURE sponsored Dr. Theuri to receive a degree in orthopedic surgery from Makerere University. He graduated in 2003 and served as CURE Kenya’s assistant medical director from 2004-2011.

In 2005, Dr. Theuri established a national clubfoot treatment program called Clubfoot Care Project for Kenya. In 2006 and 2007, he helped establish the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) orthopedic program at CURE Kenya and the Moi University Master of Medicine in Orthopedics program. He now oversees the COSECSA orthopedic training program at CURE Kenya. This training program, which is also supported by the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons, trains orthopedic residents who serve throughout Kenya and beyond.

Dr. Theuri is involved in leadership at the AIC Kijabe Local Church and is also a children’s Sunday school teacher. He and his wife, Lillian, have four children: Daniel Macharia, David Mburu, Josephine Wairimu, and Reuben Mburu.

Dr. Mwemezi Kaino

Anesthesiologist

Dr. Mwemezi Kaino serves as a Consultant Anesthesiologist at CURE Kenya.  Previously, Dr. Kaino worked at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Tanzania. He has been very active and involved in furthering the study of and advocating for accessibility to anesthesia. Dr. Kaino holds numerous certifications, is a published researcher, and has been a senior lecturer and coordinator of undergraduate and post-graduate training in anesthesia and critical care.

Dr. Kaino began his secondary education at the University of Botswana, and followed that with a degree from National Pirogov Memorial Medical University in Ukraine before returning to Tanzania to complete a master’s degree at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College. He is fluent in Russian, Ukrainian, English, Kiswahili, and the tribal languages of Kinjakyusa, Kihaya, Kihehe, and Kibena.

Dr. Kaino and his wife, Venerabla, reside in Kijabe, Kenya, along with their two daughters.

Dr. Philemon Ogeto Nyambati

Pediatric Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon

Dr. Nyambati serves as a Pediatric Orthopedic, and Spine Surgeon at the CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) and is a part of the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons (FCS-ECSA).

Dr. Nyambati is at CURE Kenya to put a smile on children’s faces through the correction and treatment of their conditions. He is married to Gladys, the Head of In-Patient Care at the Kijabe Hospital.  They enjoy serving God together through their calling to help others.

Dr. Federico Sibona

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Sibona serves as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at the CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Turn and graduate degree from Ortho University of Brescia. He spent two years between Burundi and Tanzania working as a general practitioner. In 2015, as a 4th-year resident, he was introduced to CURE.

Dr. Sibona is married to Elisa Lupi, a gynecologist, and is the father of Matteo, Marta, and Andrea.

Dr. Thomas Sough

Orthopedic and Trauma Surgeon

Dr. Sough serves as a Consultant Orthopedic and Trauma Surgeon at the CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya. He obtained an MB, BS from Ahmadu Bello University – Zaria. His past experience includes serving as a consultant orthopedic surgeon and academic lecturer at the University of Abjua Teaching Hospital – Orthopedic and Traumatology, and as a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons.

Dr. Sough is at CURE to serve the injured in society through his God-given skills in orthopedics and trauma. When not working as a surgeon, he serves as a Deacon at his local church. Dr. Sough is married to Fidelia, a certified accountant, and has four children (Praise, Joshua, Enoch, and Thelma).

Dr. Joseph Theuri

Since 2011, Dr. Joseph Theuri has served as the Medical Director of CURE Kenya, where he manages the day-to-day operations of surgery and treatment for patients at the hospital.

Dr. Kaino and his wife, Venerabla, reside in Kijabe, Kenya, along with their two daughters.

Dr. Philemon Ogeto Nyambati

Pediatric Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon

Dr. Nyambati serves as a Pediatric Orthopedic, and Spine Surgeon at the CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) and is a part of the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons (FCS-ECSA).

Dr. Nyambati is at CURE Kenya to put a smile on children’s faces through the correction and treatment of their conditions. He is married to Gladys, the Head of In-Patient Care at the Kijabe Hospital.  They enjoy serving God together through their calling to help others.

Dr. Federico Sibona

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Sibona serves as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at the CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Turn and graduate degree from Ortho University of Brescia. He spent two years between Burundi and Tanzania working as a general practitioner. In 2015, as a 4th-year resident, he was introduced to CURE.

Dr. Sibona is married to Elisa Lupi, a gynecologist, and is the father of Matteo, Marta, and Andrea.

Dr. Thomas Sough

Orthopedic and Trauma Surgeon

Dr. Sough serves as a Consultant Orthopedic and Trauma Surgeon at the CURE Children’s Hospital of Kenya. He obtained an MB, BS from Ahmadu Bello University – Zaria. His past experience includes serving as a consultant orthopedic surgeon and academic lecturer at the University of Abjua Teaching Hospital – Orthopedic and Traumatology, and as a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons.

Dr. Sough is at CURE to serve the injured in society through his God-given skills in orthopedics and trauma. When not working as a surgeon, he serves as a Deacon at his local church. Dr. Sough is married to Fidelia, a certified accountant, and has four children (Praise, Joshua, Enoch, and Thelma).

Dr. Joseph Theuri

Medical Director

Since 2011, Dr. Joseph Theuri has served as the Medical Director of CURE Kenya, where he manages the day-to-day operations of surgery and treatment for patients at the hospital.

Dr. Theuri received his bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Nairobi and completed his internship at AIC Kijabe Mission Hospital. In 1998, he joined CURE Kenya as the hospital’s first clinical resident, where he was trained and mentored by CURE Kenya’s medical director at the time, Dr. Tim Mead. At the time, the only real orthopedic training program for the region was in Uganda, so in 2000, CURE sponsored Dr. Theuri to receive a degree in orthopedic surgery from Makerere University. He graduated in 2003 and served as CURE Kenya’s assistant medical director from 2004-2011.

In 2005, Dr. Theuri established a national clubfoot treatment program called Clubfoot Care Project for Kenya. In 2006 and 2007, he helped establish the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) orthopedic program at CURE Kenya and the Moi University Master of Medicine in Orthopedics program. He now oversees the COSECSA orthopedic training program at CURE Kenya. This training program, which is also supported by the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons, trains orthopedic residents who serve throughout Kenya and beyond.

Dr. Theuri is involved in leadership at the AIC Kijabe Local Church and is also a children’s Sunday school teacher. He and his wife, Lillian, have four children: Daniel Macharia, David Mburu, Josephine Wairimu, and Reuben Mburu.
