Who We Are

History of CURE

Founders Dr. Scott and Sally Harrison saw the great physical and spiritual needs of children in Malawi and took action.

The History of CURE’s Hospital Network

For 25+ years, CURE International has provided surgical care in a compassionate, gospel-centered environment. Here’s how our network of eight children’s hospitals developed:

 

CURE Ethiopia

2008

CURE Ethiopia opens in Addis Ababa.

2019

The hospital opened the country’s first gait lab to serve patients with neuromuscular conditions.

2021

CURE Ethiopia is accredited as a teaching hospital by the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

CURE Kenya

1998

CURE Kenya opens as Africa’s first orthopedic teaching hospital in Kijabe.

2015

The hospital becomes an accredited site for residency rotation for the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

2018

A new outpatient department opens to increase capacity.

2019

Awarded charity of the year by the American Chamber of Commerce.

2023

The expansion of the children’s ward opens to serve more kids.

CURE Malawi

2002

CURE Malawi opens in Blantyre with funding from UK-based The Beit Trust as a gift to the people of Malawi.

2022

Construction begins on a new surgical center.

 

CURE Niger

2010

The hospital opens in Niamey, Niger’s capital and central to one of the most underdeveloped regions in the world.

2019

A new solar panel system allows the hospital to be independent from the country’s unstable power grid.

 

Tebow CURE Philippines

2014

The hospital opens in 2014 through a partnership with the Tim Tebow Foundation.

The third floor expansion is completed.

CURE Uganda

2001

CURE Uganda opens in Mbale and becomes one of Africa’s leading pediatric hospitals for brain surgery and the treatment of neurological conditions.

2018

CURE Hydrocephalus becomes CURE Neuro—a training program.

2021

A ward expansion opens to handle increasing patient volume.


2022

A new ICU opens, increasing the number of children served by 80 percent.

CURE Zambia

2006

CURE Zambia opens in Lusaka with funding from UK-based The Beit Trust, as a centennial gift to the nation.

2016

The hospital opens a high-dependency unit for progressive care and expanded the waiting room.

2018

The Training Center opens to help equip the country’s next generation of medical professionals.

2023

A new on-site lab is built.

The hospital opens in Bulawayo, refurbished by the Zimbabwe Orthopedic Trust in partnership with the Zimbabwean government.
