“After her birth, it was hard to accept her. I wanted to stop breastfeeding her,” Glenda's mother Agness admits to us. The stigma's against disabilities such as Glenda's cleft lip are so strong in Zambia that even Agness was unsure what to do. Thankfully, Agness has a strong uncle who set her straight. He encouraged her that there is nothing wrong with Glenda. He even threatened Agness that is he heard anything bad has happened to Glenda, he will deal with Agness severely. Agness was shocked at the time, but came to see the wisdom in his words as she loves Glenda dearly.
Unfortunately, Agness and Glenda's community did not come to share this love. In Zambia, disabilities are often seen as a punishment. People would accuse Agness saying "people don't give birth to such children. For you to give birth to her, you must have been stealing during pregnancy or you were doing other bad things.”
Agness and Glenda have lived with Glenda's cleft lip for 15 years now, putting up with the physical, social, and emotional discrimination that comes with a disability. Glenda tries to live like a normal child but it is not easy because of the attention her face attracts. She is in eight grade and she does really well at school! She aspires to become a soldier. Glenda's prospects of achieving her aspirations started to improve when one of their relatives heard about us at CURE Zambia and passed on the news!
Living with a cleft lip for so many years has been a traumatic experience for Glenda. Even though she's had her surgery, it will still take time to adjust to her new life and face. Our nurses have showed herself in a mirror several times to help psychologically as they celebrate her the healing. Medically, she is doing well and she has been discharged. She'll come back in a few weeks for a follow up visit!
In this photo, Dr. Felicilda was checking Glenda's lip after a successfully cleft lip repair surgery! The young girl had her surgery, much to the delight of her mother Agness who was excited to see her daughter when she came back from the OR. There were no complications during the surgery and Glenda is recovering back in the ward now!
