Being a new teenager is tough for any kid, but it's even more difficult for Esther who has to navigate this confusing time with a leg deformity. The exact cause of her disability isn't known, but her family remembers it started when Esther was just two months old. There had been some significant swelling and pain in her leg after she had been tied improperly on her sisters back. Their local health clinic dismissed the problem, but when Esther started walking, it became painfully obvious that her leg was bent and deformed. As she's grown, Esther's leg causes her pain and causes her to often fall down while walking, but even worse, her leg designates her as a target for the other kids to mock and exclude. Understandably Esther's temper can flare at the abuse and she has come to see herself differently than the rest of her peers. The volatile mixture of physical and emotional challenges have put Esther in a tough place in life.
Thankfully though, a family member who lives relatively near us here at CURE Zambia found out about the hope and healing we offer and suggested Esther come visit us. Now that she is here, our doctors will straighten her leg and our spiritual staff will try and work through some of these emotions with her. When Esther leaves us, she will do so with a straight leg and while she will still have challenges to overcome, she will have a strong foundation from which to face them!
Esther has been discharged! Majorie is happy that Esther has gotten the surgery she needed and they're already looking forward to coming back for Esther's follow up appointment in a few weeks. Esther will hopefully be able to have her cast removed at that point! Be praying for Esther's healing.
Esther is managing and doing well post-op! Our physical therapists have taken her measurements to get some crutches made for her at our workshop. We are monitoring her today and depending on how she does, she could be discharged as early as tomorrow! Please be praying for Esther's healing.
During surgery Dr. Lastroni, did a procedure known as a fibula transfer to correct Esther's leg! Basically this just means he moved a few bones around in her leg to make everything straight and as it should be. The surgery went very well and she had a long leg cast put on to hold everything in place for the next couple of weeks. She is recovery and can use your prayers.
Meet Esther! A thirteen year old girl who has had a deformed leg for most of her life. Besides the physical disadvantages, her leg also messes with her confidence and emotions. We're just happy she's made it here to CURE Zambia where we can get that leg straightened and spend some time with this amazing young woman!
