In April, Flavia got a pleasant surprise when she went to give birth and had triplets. She had not had an ultrasound so it was a complete surprise. Even more exciting was that all three of the babies were healthy. Two weeks down the road, this unfortunately changed as one of the triplets passed away. Flavia remained with her young sons Joseph and Christopher. When they were discharged from the hospital, Flavia was instructed to keep the babies indoors to protect them from catching infection. She followed these instructions religiously, but still, after a short while, Joseph’s head started to increase in size. He was taken back to the hospital where he was born and the doctors ended up diagnosing him with a condition called hydrocephalus where the brain cannot properly drain excess fluid. The extra fluid was causing Joseph's head to swell and, if it isn't treated, can cause major damage to his brain and life. Flavia and her husband Joseph had never even heard of hydrocephalus before and this diagnosis cause them to spiral into depression. The hospital where Joseph was diagnosed started them on a string of referrals which has ended them here with us at CURE Uganda. In all aspects, Joseph is in good hands and we ask you pray that with Joseph's upcoming surgery, Flavia and Joseph can put this whole ordeal behind them!

Joseph is doing well, so well that he was discharged today! He's continuing with his antibiotics at home and they'll ideally do the trick of clearing up any residual infection. He will be reviewed him in a few weeks where we'll check his cerebrospinal fluid again and if it is clear of infections, he will have his surgery! Photo of Joseph

Joseph had a calm night and was transferred back to the ward from ICU earlier today! Flavia told us that her family is happy about the success of Joseph’s first procedure but are aware that he has another procedure in the near future and are still praying for him. He had some blood tests done and has been started on antibiotics. Please be praying for him! Photo of Joseph

As is procedure, the doctors withdrew a sample of the fluid in Joseph's head and they found that it was bloody, meaning there is an infection that needs to be dealt with before Joseph can receive surgery for his hydrocephalus. To treat the infection, Joseph went into the OR today and received a procedure where the doctors washed out the infected area. As is also procedure, Joseph is now resting up in the ICU as he recovers from this procedure. Please be praying that he continues to recover well and that the washout was successful in clearing the infection! When Joseph’s CSF was tapped it was found to be bloody, so he headed for a washout today. It was successful and he will be transferred to ICU later this evening. Please be praying that he has a stable night. Photo of Joseph
