John Carl's Story

“When I grow up…I want to be…John Carl! And I want to drive a truck and play.” When you start a conversation with John Carl, get ready for some extreme cuteness! “I like superheroes, and my favorite is Mama.” He then turns to Children’s Mentor Ella and asks, “Where is your house? I want to go back to your house.” We quickly figure out that “Ella’s House” is the hospital playroom.

John Carl ended up at our hospital (and Ella’s house!) after the family was given the runaround over the past few months. Mom Chery Mae recounted their journey. “John Carl was playing on a chair in October, and fell, breaking his arm. At first we took him in for massage, then went to the local hospital. But, we didn’t have insurance, so they sent us to the government hospital. We waited ten times, only to be turned away and told to return later every time. We heard about CURE from our neighbor Gerlan who was recently a patient. We’re glad to finally get help.”

John Carl has an older brother, seven year old James Lloyd. If the two boys are anything alike, Chery Mae has her hands full! John Carl is always on the move, has an adventurous streak, which is also evidenced by an old scar on his leg from a burn involving a motorbike. He loves to chat with anyone and everyone, and is super ticklish! And most importantly, according to Chery Mae, “I like that he laughs a lot.” We’ve already fallen hard for this little guy, please keep him in your prayers as he has surgery to repair his elbow!

John Carl does look like he had any surgery at all! He was all cheery and happy when we visited him in the ward. Child Mentor, Patricia, spent some time with him and read him the story of the ten lepers healed by Jesus. John Carl learned that only one of the lepers returned to Jesus and gave thanks. As a response, Patricia led him in prayer to thank Jesus for giving him spiritual and physical healing! Afterward, John Carl made sure to visit the playroom before going back home again! We cannot wait to see him next month! Photo of John Carl

We almost did not recognize this little guy after three years of not seeing him! John Carl is back at Tebow CURE for another surgical procedure on his arm! His “favorite doctor,” aka Doctor Jun, did some more revisions to help straighten and align John Carl’s arm in place! We are happy to see John Carl snoozing in his room after his successful surgery. Please pray for his quick recovery! Photo of John Carl

"Dr. Jun is my favorite!" exclaims John Carl who really made a good friend in Dr. Jun. John Carl sat on Dr. Jun's lap as he explained his healing by looking at his x-ray. He's healing so good that he doesn't need to come back for another follow-up, which is bittersweet for us. But before John Carl went home, he made sure to show-off his personable character in physical therapy and made us miss him even more! We praise God for meeting joyful kids like John Carl! There wasn't a need for John Carl to ask for food this time, he got plenty with a ton of candies! We know he deserves it since he was so brave during his pin removal. He watched it and didn't budge, but only complained about pain while waiting for X-ray, which was easily diverted by reading books! Photo of John Carl

Discharge came too soon for John Carl. We loved having him as he spent all day asking for everything else today- food, stickers, toys, bubbles, play time and his signature "gwapo" pose for a picture! With a full day, he snuck in some nap time before he left. We are surely going to miss this little bubble of energy and look forward to see healing progress when he comes back! Photo of John Carl

John Carl was all kicked back relaxing today! He already had a lollipop, but he still let us know he loved us as we left the room, even without a food offering, he is too much! It took him a couple of tries to get his hand under the stick in his mouth to give us his “gwapo” (handsome) pose as he proudly told us, “no more pain!” Hopefully that means he’ll get to go home soon, but we admit, we’ll miss this face! Looking at John Carl’s X-ray, it’s amazing that his arm looked as good as it did from the outside! His elbow was completely separated, but a little cutting and pinning fixed that, now everything is back where is should be. And now he can get back to snacking, his pre-surgery fasting is over! “Bring me food!” John Carl called out as we were leaving his room earlier, so Ella brought him a bag on snacks. He polished it off in record time, he’s a growing kid after all, and as we left, he yelled, “Bye! I love you!” Chery Mae might be his hero, but food seems to be John Carl’s love language. After midnight he won’t be eating for a while though, surgery is first thing tomorrow morning, please keep him in your prayers! Photo of John Carl
