Confusion and anger are common emotions when a baby is born with a cleft lip here in Niger. It is a condition that is not well understood and is often attributed to a curse upon the family or as the result of a sin of a family member. But when sleepy little Balki was born, her mother Roukaya knew exactly what was going on, that it was nothing more than a physical deformity. You see, Roukaya herself had been born with a cleft lip and lived the majority of her life with it. She managed to marry and made the best of a life filled with people taking second glances and whispering behind her back. When her first daughter, Farida, was born, she was heartbroken to Farida also had a cleft lip. It wasn't until one of our CURE Niger outreach trips arrived in their village that they learned their cleft lips were treatable. In no time, both Farida and Roukaya were admitted here at CURE Niger. Farida received her surgery first and Roukaya followed the day after. They recovered together and went through their healing process in what was a special mother-daughter bonding experience!
Fast forwarding three years to when Balki was also born with a cleft lip, Roukaya knew exactly what to do: bring her here to CURE Niger. Balki has been here for a few weeks already, staying in our guesthouse, eating good food, and working on gaining enough weight to be able to have a safe surgery. We are happy to report she has finally reached a healthy weight and has been admitted to the ward, awaiting surgery! Roukaya could not be happier and is overjoyed knowing her girls will not have to grow up with the difficulties and stigmas she had to endure.
Balki has had her doctor's appointment and she's been given the all clear to go home! We're going to miss having this sweet one around, but we are so glad she's been able to follow in the footsteps of her sister and her mother in having her cleft lip treated here at CURE Niger!
Just a little portrait of Balki and her family in the doorway of our guesthouse where they're all staying. Every day Balki's lip looks better and better! She's got an appointment coming up with the doctor soon where we hope to hear she has the all clear to go home so please join us in praying for that!
Balki has her new lip cleaned today. It's an important part of the healing process in order to prevent infection, but as you can tell from her face, she didn't love it. Thankfully her mom understands the process and importance and is keeping her on track to have a beautifully healed lip! The other good news is that Balki has been discharged from our ward! Since she lives far away and still needs regular care, she'll be staying in our guesthouse until she's all healed up.
Balki's older sister Farida was amazed at how different Balki's face looks now that she has had her lip repaired! It's incredible how immediate the transformation is even with some residual swelling from the surgery! Head to Balki's profile to see the up close of her new lip!
Balki's cleft lip was a pretty big one, but Dr Issa handled it carefully and efficiently just as we knew he would! He was able to repair her lip and this little one is now resting up in the ward. Thank the Lord with us for the third successful surgery in Balki's family!
With all the excitement of finally being a healthy enough weight for surgery, Balki has worn herself out and has been napping all day. She's a little too young to understand what's going on, but we have never seen Roukaya this excited! Praise the Lord with us for Balki being here and please join us in praying for her successful surgery.
