The story surrounding Nassourou's condition is a bit of a mystery. In order to retrieve the story, we had to go through three different translators: Fulfulde - Zarma, Zarma - French, and French - English, which probably didn't help the clarity of the story, but the circumstances themselves are rather confusing. Nassourou's father tells us that when Nassourou was just a young child, a large and festering wound opened up on the bottom of his shin and the top side of his foot. He tells us the family did all they could to keep it from growing and to heal it, but nothing worked. Nassourou's family eventually made the difficult trek to the nearest hospital where the staff there "healed" the wound by deforming Nassourou's leg into it's current state. Whether something got lost in one of the many translations or this hospital did indeed maim Nassourou in such a way, the fact remains that for the majority of his life, Nassourou has not been able to use his right foot. He walks on his heel and is mocked endlessly by his peers around town. Nassourou had resigned to do his best with the life he had been given until one of our CURE Niger mobile clinics showed up in his village. Our staff shared with him the hope of healing that we offer and invited him to the hospital. Now that Nassourou has made it to us, our medical staff will correct his foot and send him standing on his own two feet!
Nassourou got his bandage off and saw the doctor. He is all healed up and good to go home! It's a bittersweet moment now that we won't be seeing this smiling face around the hospital anymore, but we're so happy that Nassourou is going home fully healed! "I'm excited to go home," Nassourou shared with us. "No one will believe I am the same man who left now that I have this new foot!"
After his bandage change today, Nassourou stuck around to play a little version of bowling that we've invented here at CURE Niger. He was definitely one of the better players even though it was only his first time (it helped that the average age of the rest of the players was around 5 years old, but still) !
We promise that Nassourou does indeed smile sometimes, but every time we're ready to take the photo, he throws on his serious face! Nassourou is still on the bandage change and wound cleaning train, but every one gets us just a little closer to complete healing!
Our man is becoming a regular fixture here in the bandage change/wound cleaning waiting area. Everything is going fine, but we need to be diligent and thorough with a procedure as large as Nassourou's. We're incredibly thankful he has a great attitude towards the whole process!
The trek onwards continues as Nassourou attends yet another wound cleaning and bandage change appointment. It's not all rough though, he hangs around the hospital after his appointments and is actually doing some Bible themed crafts and games with our spiritual staff right now!
Nassourou is back for more wound cleanings and bandage changes. It's a lot of work, but we're staying on top of it to make sure this guy gets the best results possible! Nassourou has a great attitude about all the work and discomfort he has to put in and deal with, but he could still use your prayers for patience and strength!
Nassourou is no worse for the wear after his skin graft yesterday! The doctors took some skin from his inner thigh and attached it to his foot. We were able to sit with him and a new friend he made this morning in order to read them some of your get well messages before Nassourou got discharged! Thanks for all the love you've shown to this young man!
Our man is back and heading into surgery! Thankfully everything is fine, he just needs another quick skin graft which is not a big procedure by any means. With this said, please keep praying with us that his attitude stays positive and everything continues as planned.
Nassourou stopped in for his first bandage change and wound cleaning today. It's a little bit of a painful process, but important in order to keep away infection and have everything heal up properly. Overall, he seemed pretty unfazed by it and just wants to do whatever it takes to get better!
Lela from our surgical staff spent some time with Nassarou this morning, right before he got discharged! He's had a good run here in the hospital, but now it's time for him to finish up the healing process at home. He'll be back for a few bandage changes and wound cleanings before his follow up appointment in a few weeks!
Nassarou's surgery was fantastic! There was a lot of pushing and pulling to get his released foot into the correct position, but the doctors were ultimately successful. Praise the Lord for a surgery well done and we can't wait to see him as he heals up and begins to walk again!
Nassourou is finally with us and we cannot wait to get this foot straightened out! Will you join us in lifting this young man up in prayer as he gets ready for surgery and the hard healing work that comes after it?
