“Life was really painful back at my home. I used to lock myself up in the house for weeks so no one would see me," Lucia heartbreakingly tells us.

Lucia is a precious young woman who has finally arrived here at CURE Malawi hospital. She was born with clubfoot and never knew her condition was treatable. For 17 years now, she has lived with this disability. Besides the physical disadvantages of clubfoot, her disability had begun to suck away her hope and joy for the future. She believed she would never be able to make something of her life. Her disability even spread pain to the rest of her family. "Lucia would tell me she would love to be a doctor and tears would stream down my cheeks. I was hopeless too. There was no where to take her. There was nothing I could do for her,” Lucia’s mother Nezia told us.

Lucia lives with her family in Mozambique. And for 17 years has done her best despite her disadvantages. But it was on a recent trip to Nezia's home village in Malawi that the pair met a missionary. This missionary was able to tell them about us here at CURE Malawi. For the first time in 17 years, both Lucia and Nezia had hope! A few weeks later, Lucia and her mother were provided with transportation to come to meet our CURE Malawi doctors. Now that she is here, our doctors are going to correct her feet and send her home into a new future!

“I hope one day I will be able to put on shoes and be able to run. I am happy that we came to CURE Malawi for help,” said Lucia with a still small smile.

Lucia's operation took longer than the doctors thought. However, the procedure to correct her right foot was very successful!
