“I remember some students in my class would make jokes about my burnt hand. I told my mother about it and she promised me that she will try to look for help to fix my hand,” Maclifa shared with us. Maclifa was burnt when he was six years old. He was with his friends warming themselves by the fire. Unfortunately, Meclifa’s shirt got too close to the flames and caught fire, badly burning his left hand. His parents took him to the closest hospital where he was given an initial treatment, but in the months that followed, Maclifa's hand healed incorrectly. The skin healed in a way where it pulled his hand down into an unusable position. "He complains of the pain andI would love to see my son healed,” Maclifa’s mother Odeta told us. Maclifa was seen at one of our CURE Malawi mobile clinics in his home village and was booked to come here for the operation he needs to free his hand!
There has been so much improvement in Maclifa's arm and he's getting more and more mobile! Maclifa is now spending much of his time in the playroom and we are so grateful for all your support and prayers. Please continue!
Maclifa's review was a quick one the other day and he went into the operation room for another procedure! The doctors figured out his pinky finger wouldn't be functional even after releasing it from the burn contracture, so they removed it completely. Maclifa came out of the OR in a bit of pain, but mostly hungry like a wolf. He immediately chomped down some nsima, beans, and greens. Please continue to keep Maclifa in your prayers as he recovers and adjusts to his new hand!
Maclifa not only loves blowing balloons up, but also chewing on them. This weekend he celebrated CUREkid, Tiyamike's birthday and had the best moves on the dance floor. We are hoping we get to see those moves more often in the kid's ward. Maclifa will be reviewed by the doctor tomorrow to see what's next. Thanks for keeping him in your prayers!
Maclifa is hanging with the boys today! He loves having so many friends in the hospital, especially that are all boys. Often the girls dominate in the kid's ward, but this week the boys are winning. Today they are all watching Malawian music videos on a guardian's phone. Maclifa's hand is healing well, but it seems his pinky finger is still contracted, so the doctors are creating a plan for what they can do next. Please keep Maclifa in your prayers while he patiently waits for the doctors decision.
Maclifa had a wound inspection yesterday and things are looking good! He's still hanging around the hospital for physical therapy this week, patiently waiting for his discharge, but is loving his friends and the playroom while he waits. Thanks for keeping this cool guy in your prayers while he's with us at CURE Malawi!
Maclifa's surgery was a success and his hand is healing straight! Today he has the biggest smile on his face and is really liking his new cast. Maclifa will have a wound inspection next week, but while he's hanging out around the kid's ward he plans on playing lots of Bao (board game) with his new friends. Please join us in continuing to keep Maclifa in our prayers while he patiently waits for his wound inspection!
Maclifa is having his first surgery today! The doctors will be releasing the burn contracture on his left hand. He was nervous going into the operating room, but excited for his new straight hand and arm. Please keep Maclifa in your prayers while he undergoes surgery!
Today Maclifa is reading books with friends from our Spiritual Center's mobile library. He has become quite the social butterfly around here. Maclifa loves making new friends and he's looking forward to making many more throughout his stay in the hospital. We found out Maclifa has malaria, so he's now on medication and his surgery will be postponed. Please keep him in your prayers while he recovers and patiently waits for his operation.
Maclifa is here at CURE Malawi and we are excited to get his wrist straightened out. He's been living with it for a while now, but it's inconvenient and painful and we can't wait to be a part of giving this young man back his hand! Please join us in praying for him, for strength as he prepares for surgery and for big dreams as his new future is opening up before him!
