Mary is the last born child in her family of three. Mary’s parents are local farmers in order to earn a living and they do small-scale business as well. Living in a village that does not have enough of the right equipment at a remote health center can be very hard and difficult to meet the needs of the children that have a deformity. Mary is one of children from Thyolo who was born with clubfeet but, her parents could not get her treated due to unavailability of resources at the local health center. “I wish we had a hospital like CURE near my village that best treats children so that we have a free generation of clubfoot. At the local hospital where I took my daughter, I was told to be stretching Mary’s feet and that her feet will correct. That never happened and my daughter was getting more and more pain the more we waited and not finding a way to help her. When I insisted to be seen, I was referred to a hospital near CURE, which I was not aware that CURE is next door, and the doctors showed me to come here at CURE. I have just arrived here with my daughter Mary, but the caring that CURE has displayed to us, is so amazing and I know that at the end of this trip, Mary will be normal. I love that now Mary will receive a free treatment with care and love,” said Monica, the mother to Mary. Please join us in praying for Mary's complete healing!
This was our view when we opened our office door into the physiotherapy department this morning! Mary is back to her happy self this visit - we guess mom is more comforting than dad. Mary and her mom Monica are back for a check-up, and she got a new set of braces for her feet. We'll see her again December 14th at clubfoot clinic. Thanks for your incoming prayers! https://youtu.be/53iNtDXQtto
Mary's back a few days early, and Avanell was so happy to see her before she goes back to the US for a month. Unfortunately, Mary is not very happy today - she's probably not looking forward to having her casts removed, or maybe daddy just isn't quite as comforting as mommy when you're in the hospital. We can see where Mary gets her lovely smile, though! She'll see the doctor and the physio today and then probably go back home! https://youtu.be/a7dGRO-7Sxw
Mary went home yesterday! Unfortunately, CUREkids Coordinator Avanell was away and couldn't take a video of her leaving, but Zione got this great photo of her with her dad, and a quote! Her dad says, "I am so happy that today I am here to take my family back home. I have been hearing that CURE has been taking care of my daughter and it is true. Mary is so much better now. Thank you all for your effort and caring, God bless you ALL." She'll be back in for clubfoot clinic on September 14th! Our Avanell is going back home for a vacation the day before, so we're going to miss a video again, but hopefully the lovely Zione can get a photo update!
Mary's surgery yesterday went well and now she's recovering in the ward! Here's a video highlighting her operation! She had a PMR, where the tendons on the back of the foot/leg are released or stretched out so that the foot can be planted flat. Please continue to pray for her as she recovers! https://youtu.be/ZBZKxtcxhvk
Every morning we have worship for the patients and their guardians, and this morning Monica and Mary joined in! We believe that spiritual and emotional healing can be just as impactful and important as physical healing, so we make sure to provide counseling and worship - and most importantly, proclaim Jesus - to the patients in our hospital who may have had very negative experiences in their pasts because of their disabilities.
Please be praying for Mary as she goes in for her second operation today! The doctors need to do a Posteriormedial Release this time, which basically means they'll release the tight tendons and muscles in hopes that it will help her foot to correct and not relapse into clubfoot.

Mary was hanging out with her mom while the other ladies did each other's hair this afternoon. Mary's going in to have another operation tomorrow since we couldn't get her feet all the way flat last time - please be praying for her and Monica!
Our BFF Mary is back to 100% today it seems - giggling, drinking tea, yelling "ndjumbule" ("take a photo of me!") at us and in general scooting around the ward! She wanted pictures and we didn't have our DSLR handy, but we just had to show you how cute she was being in this video we took on our phone! https://youtu.be/XzzXibn8yC0
Mary had her tenetomy yesterday and is a still bit cranky today, but is otherwise recovering well! Her extremely minor operation, which is usually done under local anesthesia in the ward, went well! Clinical Officer Mak explains a bit in the video of what they did and not being able to get it all the way corrected. When we talked to Dr. Kyle, he says that means that they'll need to do another, more invasive operation next week. Please pray for her! https://youtu.be/3J6G1iKzim4
Mary's waiting to go in for her operation - she had medicine that made her all sleepy and silly! Please be praying for her as she has her tenotomy today! https://youtu.be/WYGfq-kA4q0
Mary is doing well today and will be having surgery for her feet tomorrow! Please be praying for her as she goes in for an operation. Here's a video of her enjoying her bread and tea this morning! https://youtu.be/m3_SdDzgafc
Mary had a blast listening to get-well messages today - and playing with Thandy's keys! Her dad came by today and was quite impressed by the improvement in Mary's feet - and Monica is really happy too! Thank you all for your prayers! https://youtu.be/UqRmY7f0eUo
Mary was enjoying sitting on her throne yesterday - nothing makes a better seat than mom's back! She had another cast change today and hopefully will be set to have her operation next week! https://youtu.be/rZaCWnmjMik
Today we're having some guest's on Mary's page, her friends Francis and Mike! This morning during ward rounds they were singing Malawi's national anthem - incorrectly, Thandy tells us. They also sang a song about the months. They were so cute we had to share! Mary's doing well and will have another cast change tomorrow. https://youtu.be/HasPb7SWooM
Mary was being quite contrary today when we were trying to take her video while her mom was holding her outside - she kept leaning back and going limp on poor Monica. We showed her that video though and then she sat up and started grinning for this video! https://youtu.be/zfPvIsTn1qA
We're thinking Mary's feet will be ready for tendon lengthening, with an option of maybe a more extensive surgery depending on how tight her feet are, next week! Today she was having fun waiting in line for lunch - flapping her arms and grinning for the camera on her mom's back! https://youtu.be/TavKmHJAtoA
Mary's doing well! Yesterday she had another cast change and Thandy let her play with his ring to distract her while she had her casts taken off! During ward rounds today Patrick sounded hopeful that they could do most of the correction through casting since it is coming along nicely. Dr. Lubega said, "Good, we want her to be able to wear high-heeled shoes on her wedding day!" https://youtu.be/M7daHkBa14s
Bethan, a volunteer from the UK, was taking selfies with Mary, Tapiwa, and Thokozani! Bethan is considering being a doctor like her dad and wanted to experience healthcare outside of the western world so has come to CURE Malawi to see what it's like! Please be praying for Bethan as she decides what she wants to do with her life. One way or another, she's great with kids, they loved taking selfies with her this morning! https://youtu.be/jWbLh0jCE1w
Yesterday, Hastings from the Spiritual Department shared a message with some of the kids and guardians from the ward and like most little kids during church, Mary didn't seem to be paying very much attention, although her mom was encouraged by it! https://youtu.be/d-tAGRPd9CY
Witness was a bit fussy today after the nurse took his temperature so we cheered him up with a video - he LOVES having his video taken almost as much as Mary! https://youtu.be/WXlNj2OTCrA
Mary sang us a lovely song today! She's also having another set of casts. We asked Faith, another CUREkid who speaks English to translate what she was singing, and she said, "Ah, she's saying nothing, it's all gibberish!" https://youtu.be/2RO19QMNNiY
Mary and Monica listened to your get-well messages today! Monica says that sometimes Mary's casts are itchy during the night and it's really uncomfortable for her, but she's been really happy during the day. She's been so much more cheerful than when she first came! Monica and Mary were really grateful for all the messages! https://youtu.be/jJo3GFNFYMg
Mary had another cast change today! She seemed a little less unhappy about having her cast put on, but she was still a bit grumpy about it. Physio Patrick sized up her feet and the angle and says she still has a lot of casts to go before her tenotomy! https://youtu.be/LVsx7K9CGmY
Mary's doing well and will be having a cast change tomorrow. She is going to be checked out by the doctors to see how her feet are coming along! https://youtu.be/uHUiClvNOLU
Video mode on my phone isn't as good quality as on a DSLR, but the expressions you get from the kids when they see themselves on the screen is priceless! Mary, Martha, Sufian and Christopher were enjoying seeing themselves! https://youtu.be/Sjzjca5egUk
Today Mary was wearing her shorts on her head! Not our idea of a good hat, but when you're three it seems hilarious! She also had another cast change. Again, she wasn't very happy during the process so you can pray that she won't be scared anymore. https://youtu.be/9fvvLyX6MTE
Mary had her cast change yesterday, not today! Unfortunately, she really doesn't like having her cast changed. It's painless getting ponseti but it can be a bit scary for a little kid, especially the saw to get your cast off. No worries though, she was up and smiling again afterwards! She'll have another cast change on Monday, please pray that she's less scared next time! https://youtu.be/BPKWgmWZQ1w
Mary was having fun watching TV with a couple of the other kids yesterday evening! And eating a pen - um, yum? She'll have a cast change tomorrow! https://youtu.be/_hjT0vD4Gdg
After much struggling with the internet, we managed to get Mary's video loaded, but just a short clip for today! Last night her mom, Monica, was wrapping her hair in a duku, a sort of wrap with African chitenge fabric! So cute! https://youtu.be/XqGXj87pWsY
Thandy was playing with Mary during ward rounds this morning! She had her first cast last evening so we didn't manage to catch the process but we hope to soon, since she'll be having multiple casts! We're going to try to see if we can update her profile with only video, but it depends on our internet here in Malawi whether that will work out or not! https://youtu.be/aldefnvD29g
Meet Mary! Mary has pretty severe neglected clubfoot and has come in for Ponseti treatment. She will have a series of casts to manipulate the foot flat, and then a small operation to keep it from reoccurring. We love her sweet skipping and are so happy that soon she can walk and run with healthy feet! https://youtu.be/pXG3cHnsLTg
