“When he was younger, he would just sit and play with his extra thumb, but now that he is getting older, it is getting in his way," Reyan's grandmother Wegayehu tells us. She elaborates that it is affecting his grip and even messing with his ability to eat for himself since most Ethiopian meals are eaten with one's hands. Reyan was born with a double thumb on his right hand. Besides the physical challenges presented by Rayan's thumb, there are a host of emotional troubles that accompany it. Those with physical conditions that differentiate them from others are often mocked endlessly and heavily discriminated against. While Reyan is still young, his loving family has shielded him from much of this. But knowing his likely future, Reyan's family has been searching for a solution to Reyan's thumb. Their search has led them here to CURE Ethiopia after another hospital told them of the hope and healing we offer. Having treatment at such a young age will spare Reyan both the physical and emotional challenges of having an abnormality in Ethiopia. Soon his double thumb will just be a story told about when he was a baby and no longer a reality for this little guy!
Little Reyan is doing great! At his follow-up today the bandage he had on was removed and his finger is healing well. Since the surgical wound he had is healed, now he is free to move his fingers as he likes! We will see him again in a couple of months when he returns for another check-up!
After a weekend of healing up, Reyan is bored with us here at CURE Ethiopia and ready to head home. Thankfully, our doctors say he's healed up well and they agree he's ready to be discharged! Please continue praying for this little guy as he leaves us and we'll see him when he comes back for his follow up in June.
Reyan's surgery was a success! He had his duplicate thumb removed yesterday. Dr. Teddy removed both the extra tissue and bone before stitching Reyan's hand back up nicely. Reyan now has a nice big bandage and a splint to keep things in place as he recovers. The little guy is resting and recovering well in the ward. Please pray for this little boy for a speedy recovery!
Reyan and his grandmother Wegayehu are here getting ready for Reyan's surgery to remove his extra thumb! Reyan is a funny little guy who loves to practice his speaking by mimicing any words said to him. We thank the Lord for the joy he has brought to the CURE Ethiopia ward and pray for his upcoming surgery!
