“I dream of being a pilot someday,” says Bekri, his eyes on the sky.
Bekri is a sixth grader who loves running around and playing with his friends. “My favorite sport is soccer and I always play it with all my friends” Bekri shared with us proudly. Bekri and his father Mohammed came to CURE Ethiopia seeking help for Bekri’s burn contracture. The accident happened when Bekri was only a couple of months old. “He was so little and he has just started moving at the time” says Mohammed, his eyes tearing up slightly. He pauses and then continues, “We live in a rural area so we use a lantern for light and we did not see him when he tried to grab it. The lantern then tipped and fell on him, burning almost half of his body”. His family took him to a medical center, but Bekri's skin has healed so that his left arm is melted to his chest.
CURE is not their first hospital as they have been to many different hospitals, but none could provide the help Bekri needs. “Some of the hospitals we went to, told us they could not help us and the ones that can, I could not afford the treatment.” Mohammed shared with us and continues, “Finally, I decided to come to the capital and we did, luckily we met a stranger in one of the hospital we went to and he told us about CURE.”
We are glad Bekri has made it to us and please join us welcoming Bekri and Mohammed as they start Bekri’s healing journey!
