Neither Meskel nor her family are sure what happened to cause her left foot to become deformed when she was 3 years old, but they do know it's about time for it to be healed. CURE Ethiopia is the first hospital they've visited for a solution. Meskel helps a lot around the house, and her parents are both farmers. Without help from CURE, they would not be able to afford the surgery needed for Meskel's healing. She has 2 sisters and 4 brothers. She also likes to play with her friends in the village.
Meskel has not experienced any bullying because of her condition, and she has not started school yet, because it's hard for her to get there. She can't wait to recover from this surgery at CURE, because she wants to start school to get her education so that she can someday become an Amharic teacher.
The operation she had is called a midfoot osteotomy and an ATL. midfoot osteotomy will straighten out and lengthen her foot, allowing her to have the full flexibility that she does not currently have, and the ATL will give flexibility to her ankle.
Meskel does not need a brace anymore! Her left foot is healed and she can wear a normal shoe now! Since she is done with the left foot, it is time for the right one, she will come back for an operation in six weeks and she will have a cavovarus correction on her right foot. Please keep her in your prayers!
Meskel's foot is well corrected and she can wear a supporting shoe that functions like a brace now. The brace will help her walk better! We will see her progress when she returns for her follow-up in August!
We are so glad we got to spend some time with Meskel today! She is doing very well and her foot is healing well too. Our physician put on a below knee cast so that she could walk with it. We will see her in a couple of weeks for another follow-up.
Meskel is doing great! She came in for a follow-up and her foot is healing well. She still needs another cast for four weeks to completely heal her foot. We will see the progress she is making when she returns, please keep her in your prayers!
