Jerry Tubergen

CURE Board Chairman | Chairman, Buttonwood Capital Management

Board Member Since 1999, Board Chairman Since 2008

Jerry is the Founder and Chairman of Buttonwood Capital Management. Prior to establishing Buttonwood, Jerry was the founder of Ottawa Avenue Private Capital, a registered investment advisory firm that manages investment capital for a small group of high-net-worth families. Jerry was also CEO of RDV Corporation, a full-service, multi-generational family office that he established in 1991 to serve the comprehensive wealth management needs of five related families.

Jerry began his career with Deloitte & Touche in 1976, serving in Chicago and the firm’s Brussels, Belgium, offices, and was Managing Partner of the Grand Rapids office from 1987–1991. He was a member of the firm’s Managing Partners Advisory Council and left Deloitte in 1991 to establish RDV Corporation.

Jerry serves on several private equity fund advisory boards throughout North America and Europe. He was appointed by the Governor of Michigan to serve on the State of Michigan’s Pension Investment Advisory Board, which oversees more than $75 billion in investment assets. And, he represented the Orlando Magic on the NBA Board of Governors for 15 years, and now serves as its Alternate Governor.

Jerry earned his master’s in tax law from DePaul University and his undergraduate degree in business administration from Western Michigan University. He is a certified public accountant.

Joe Stowell

CURE Vice Chairman | Former President of Moody Bible Institute & Cornerstone University

Board member since 2018

Recently retired, Joseph M. Stowell served as the President of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
An internationally recognized conference speaker, Joe has written numerous devotionals for Our Daily Bread and several books, including The Trouble with Jesus, Simply Jesus and You, and Redefining Leadership: Character-Driven Habits of Effective Leaders.

Joe has a distinguished career in higher education and church leadership. He served as Senior Pastor of Southgate Baptist Church (Southgate, Ohio, 1970-76), Bible Baptist Church (Kokomo, Indiana, 1976-81), and Highland Park Baptist Church (Southfield, Michigan, 1981-87). From 1987-2005, he served as President of Moody Bible Institute, overseeing the undergraduate and graduate schools, Moody Publishers, and the Moody Broadcasting Network. Following his time at Moody Bible Institute, he served as a teaching pastor at a church in suburban Chicago before assuming the presidency at Cornerstone in early 2008.

Joe has served on several boards, including the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Wheaton College. He graduated from Cedarville University and Dallas Theological Seminary and was honored with a Doctor of Divinity degree from The Master’s College in 1987 and Huntington University in 2011.

Peter Schulze

CURE Board Treasurer | Chairman, Global Opportunities Holdings

Board Member Since 2008, Treasurer

Peter Schulze is a private investor with a broad background in nonprofit management and governance. He is involved in the leadership of Splash Kingdom LLC as partner in the family waterparks in Texas, board member and shareholder in Keep Point LLC investment management firm, and founding chairman (2009-2013), board member, and shareholder of Schulze Global Investments LTD.

In addition to his long-term commitment to the mission of CURE, he serves as Chairman of Joni & Friends, and Vice-Chair and Treasurer of Mercy Ships International—where he was former Managing Director and CFO. Peter is co-founder of Christian television production Cross Roads Communications LTD and serves as Chair of SAT-7 in North America.

Peter graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and received his MBA from Regent University in Virginia.

Mike Houskamp

CURE Board Secretary | Associate Broker with Coldwell Banker Woodland Schmidt

Board Member since 2019, Board Secretary

Mike is a small business owner and an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Woodland Schmidt in residential and commercial real estate–where he is in the Chairman’s Circle of Top 50 Agents in a company of 1,100. He was involved for several years with International Aid, which provided medical equipment in hard places around the world and merged with CURE International in 2019.

Mike received his business degree from Calvin College and has worked in sales and marketing his entire career.

Sharon Almeida

CEO, Banner Rehabilitation Hospital

Sharon is a trained Nurse and born-again Christian who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Banner Rehabilitation Hospital in the Phoenix Metro area.

A longtime supporter of CURE, Sharon is passionate about CURE’s emphasis on treating the whole child, spiritually and physically, both in the community and at the hospital. She has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Arizona State University and a master’s in nursing with an emphasis in hospital leadership.

Judy Bellig

Vice President, Diablo Investment Co.

Board Member Since 2008

Judy Bellig currently serves as the Vice President of family-owned Diablo Investment Company. She was actively involved for 14 years in the insurance industry at Brast and Bellig Insurance Services. Prior to that, she taught elementary school.

Judy is an active volunteer and has served as secretary for the board of The Gathering, tutored for Faith Network in the Oakland Public Schools, taught at Women’s Bible studies and Good News Clubs for children, counseled at children’s camps, and is currently serving in the discipling and biblical counseling ministries at her home church. Judy has visited most of the CURE hospitals, where she’s inspired by the patients, the staff, and the physical and spiritual healing God brings.

Judy earned her degrees in teaching and speech correction from the University of the Pacific and California State University.

Fred Bw’Ombongi

Vice President of Operations, Allina Health

Board Member since 2022

A native Kenyan, Fred Bw’Ombongi is Vice President of Operations at Allina Health and is the former System Director at Corewell (formerly Spectrum) Health. Prior to that, he served as Division Director and Interim Vice President of Operations at KentuckyOne Health.

In addition to his work with CURE International, he is co-founder and Board Chair of Opening Village Doors Foundation, a micro-lending, education, and training organization in Kenya. He co-founded and served as Board Chair with the Refugee Education Center in West Michigan. And, he serves on the board of the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota.

Fred is the recipient of the Henry Dunant Global Impact Award by the American Red Cross of Greater West Michigan and the Community Champion Award by the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce. He was featured on the 40 Under 40 list by the Grand Rapids Business Journal in 2014.

Fred earned a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree in international business from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Duane Cressman

President of Cressman Homes Ltd.

Board Member Since 2020

Duane is the founder and President of Cressman Homes Ltd., a real estate development company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and has been involved in developing residential real estate across western Canada for the past 30+ years.

Duane has served on many industry-related boards at local, provincial, and national levels, as well as in his local church and other para-church boards. He was first introduced to CURE in 2010, and his connection grew as he met the international hospital staff dedicated to serving children in need. Duane became a board member of CURE International Canada in 2013, and president and chairman of the Canadian board in 2015.

Dr. Rick Gardner

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, The Hospital for Sick Children, Assistant Professor at University of Toronto

Rick served full-time as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with CURE for ten years, initially at CURE Ethiopia Children’s Hospital (2013-2020) and then at CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe (2020-2023). During this time, Dr. Rick served in different roles, including as medical director of CURE Ethiopia (2017-2020) and later as the chief medical officer (CMO) for CURE International (2020-2023). As CMO, Dr. Rick engaged regularly with the medical directors of each CURE children’s hospital and was an active participant in the CURE Executive Leadership Team.

Dr. Rick completed his surgical training in the UK, followed by a pediatric orthopedic fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. His first introduction to CURE was in 2009 as a surgical fellow at CURE Malawi. Seeing the burden of childhood disability firsthand in Africa and CURE’s impact in the countries where we serve were instrumental in his move to Ethiopia.

In September 2023, Dr. Rick returned to Toronto to work at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). He remains fully engaged in global surgery and in his support of CURE’s mission. He is married to Anne, a microfinance consultant, and they have three children.

Marcia McIntyre

Founder and President, MADALA

Board Member since 2018

Marcia is founder and President of MADALA, a nonprofit that invests in ministries that expand God’s kingdom in French-speaking West Africa. In that region, she has developed partnerships with a myriad of Christian organizations and churches working in healthcare, education, church-planting, evangelism, and orphan care. Through Madala, Marcia was instrumental in helping launch CURE’s hospital in Niger, West Africa, where she has traveled dozens of times.

Luke Nieuwenhuis

Vice President of Global Sales, Amway

Board Member since 2019

Luke has worked for Amway since 2004, fulfilling various roles within the organization, including serving in his current capacity as Vice President of Global Sales. He also was involved for several years with International Aid, an organization that provided medical equipment to hard places around the world and that merged with CURE International in 2019.

Luke received bachelor’s degrees in geology and in international business from Calvin College. He holds an MBA from Michigan State University.

Dr. John O’Dowd

Medical Director of RealHealth

Board Member Since 2020

John is a reconstructive spinal surgeon from London, England, in full-time clinical practice. John has founded several businesses as a means of solving healthcare and healthcare technology problems, and he is currently the Medical Director of RealHealth in the Netherlands.

John previously served as President of the Society for Back Pain Research and was a founder and Education Director for AO Spine, which is now the largest spinal surgical education and research organization worldwide. In addition, he has chaired and lectured on spinal surgical courses across the globe. He is Chairman of CURE International UK, a London-based affiliate organization to CURE International, and is delighted to represent them on the CURE board.

He received his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at St. Thomas’s Medical School in London.

Luke has worked for Amway since 2004, fulfilling various roles within the organization, including serving in his current capacity as Vice President of Global Sales. He also was involved for several years with International Aid, an organization that provided medical equipment to hard places around the world and that merged with CURE International in 2019.

Luke received bachelor’s degrees in geology and in international business from Calvin College. He holds an MBA from Michigan State University.

John is a reconstructive spinal surgeon from London, England, in full-time clinical practice. John has founded several businesses as a means of solving healthcare and healthcare technology problems, and he is currently the Medical Director of RealHealth in the Netherlands.

John previously served as President of the Society for Back Pain Research and was a founder and Education Director for AO Spine, which is now the largest spinal surgical education and research organization worldwide. In addition, he has chaired and lectured on spinal surgical courses across the globe. He is Chairman of CURE International UK, a London-based affiliate organization to CURE International, and is delighted to represent them on the CURE board.

He received his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at St. Thomas’s Medical School in London.
