Changing Lives Since 2008

CURE Ethiopia has been a place of hope since opening its doors in 2008. As a teaching hospital in partnership with the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA), we are multiplying the next generation of healthcare workers through our residency and fellowship training programs. With 70 beds, four operating rooms, and an outpatient clinic, we provide both world-class medical care and minister to the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their communities.

Megertu | Clubfoot

Before Surgery

Megertu was born with clubfoot, a condition that made it hard for her to walk, prevented her from attending school regularly, and brought her ridicule.

After Surgery

Surgery to correct her clubfoot transformed Megertu’s life. She says, “[Now I have] a productive, independent life. I am happier, I learned to pray, and I have compassion for people suffering.”

Adey Abate

Executive Director

Adey Abate has served as the executive director of CURE Ethiopia since September 2007. She was integral in opening the hospital and overseeing its operations since the facility’s first surgery in January 2009.

Adey is originally from Ethiopia but moved to the United States during high school. She moved back to her birthplace to serve with CURE in Addis Ababa. Adey is very grateful for the opportunity to give back to her birthplace and be part of CURE’s mission.

Her experiences before joining CURE and returning to Ethiopia include roles at The Boeing Company, both on the commercial and defense programs, her last position being a subcontract manager for the Missile Defense Program at Boeing. She also worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, one of the largest US federal government contractors, as a senior consultant. Adey has a master’s degree from Seattle University.

Adey enjoys traveling and experiencing different cultures. She also enjoys the outdoors and sports. She is an avid tennis player and played competitively both in high school and college.

Sara Kahsay

Nursing Director

Sara serves as the Nursing Director for CURE Ethiopia. She has been in this role since 2019. Sara has a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in maternal and child health.

Debebe Leta

Program Manager

Debebe serves as the Program Manager for CURE Ethiopia. In 2017, he served as the Senior Monitoring, Evaluation, and Government Relations Officer, and in 2019, he was promoted to the position of Program Manager. Before coming to CURE, Debebe served in similar roles for CARE International, World Vision, and Action Aid International. Debebe is married to Woinshet and is blessed with two children, Abigail and Henok.

Metesabia Mamo

Human Resource Director

Metasabia serves as the Human Resource Director for CURE Ethiopia. She started in 2008 as an administrative assistant, and in 2011, transitioned to the role of cleft lip coordinator before becoming the human resources manager. In 2019, Metesabia was promoted to the position of human resource director. Metasabia holds a bachelor’s degree in management information systems, a postgraduate diploma in development management, and a master’s degree in human resource management.

Dr. Tim Nunn

Medical Director

Dr. Tim Nunn serves as the Medical Director at CURE Ethiopia where he manages the day-to-day operations of surgery and treatment for patients at the hospital.

Dr. Tim Nunn completed a biblical and intercultural studies course at All Nations Christian College. He trained in Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and completed fellowships in Sheffield, United Kingdom, where he worked as a pediatric orthopedic consultant. Dr. Nunn also worked in South Africa and Kenya before coming to Ethiopia.

He is passionate about helping the most vulnerable children in low-income countries by sharing his skills and knowledge to build the national orthopedic surgical capacity while also sharing the gospel in deed and word.

He and his wife, Rachel, who works as a general practitioner, have three children, Matt, Beka, and Joel. Outside of work, Nunn enjoys working in his tool shed and fishing.

Abinet Takele

Finance Director

Abinet serves as the Finance Director for CURE Ethiopia. He has been in this role since 2017. He is married and a father of three, one girl and two boys.

Mesfin Taye

Counseling Director

Mesfin Taye serves as the counseling director at CURE Ethiopia where he ministers to patients, their families, and coworkers. In addition, Mesfin works with local churches to identify more children who need medical care. He joined CURE International in 2007 as a CURE clubfoot coordinator before being promoted to counseling director the following year.

Mesfin holds a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Evangelical Theological College and two master’s degrees in social psychology from Addis Ababa University and in Christian counseling from Vision International University. Additionally, he holds various certifications in leadership, counseling, and church administration.

He and his wife, Mahlet, have three children: Brook, Bitsiet, and Emnet. Outside of work, Mesfin loves to spend time with his family, participate in church ministry, and build support groups for adults with disabilities. One of his greatest passions in life is preaching the gospel and helping to expand God’s kingdom.

Mahlet Teshome

Director of Facilities

Mahlet Teshome serves as the Director of Facilities at CURE Ethiopia, where she oversees operations of the maintenance and facilities department to ensure facilities align with the mission, values, and objectives of the organization. 

Mahlet holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Technology and Management and a Master’s Degree in Project Management from Addis Ababa University. Her experience in the construction industry ranges from working as an office engineer for a private contractor to managing construction projects in an international donor agency. Mahlet is excited to use her skills to further the mission of CURE and help more children with treatable disabilities. 

Mahlet and her husband Michael are blessed with two children, Christian and Zema. She found her love of CURE through her experience as a mother. She loves seeing children and their families filled with hope because of the medical and spiritual care at CURE.

Dr. Stefano Bolongaro

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon / Ethiopia

Dr. Stefano Bolongaro is an Orthopedic Pediatric Surgeon at CURE Ethiopia. When Dr. Stefano met Dr. Tim Mead during a fellowship in Africa, he was introduced to CURE. He loves that CURE not only focuses on the physical and emotional aspect of medicine but also the spiritual side where we spread the gospel to unreached countries like Niger. Dr. Stefano loves how important teamwork is at CURE Ethiopia. Everyone is committed and focused on improving the lives of children suffering from treatable disabilities, which is extremely important to him. He’s excited to help heal and spread the gospel!

Dr. Mesfin Etsub

Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Mesfin Etsub serves as a consultant orthopedic surgeon at CURE Ethiopia. He was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and he studied medicine at Addis Ababa University. In July of 2007, he had the opportunity to conduct his five-year orthopedic surgery training at CURE Kenya under the COSECSA program. Following completion of his training in 2012, he returned to CURE Ethiopia to begin serving as a consultant orthopedic surgeon.

Dr. Mesfin takes joy in his work helping children who suffer from treatable disabilities. He is married and has three boys.

Dr. Tirunesh Busha Gemechu

Pediatric Anesthesiologist

Dr. Tirunesh serves as a Pediatric Anesthesiologist at CURE Ethiopia where she delivers anesthesia to patients going in for surgery. In addition, she assists her team by evaluating, monitoring, and supervising the patient before, during, and after surgery.

Dr. Tirunesh attended Jimma University where she studied medicine. After graduating as a general medical practitioner, she served for three years at a rural public hospital. She then returned to Jimma’s medical college and completed a residency program in anesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine. She’s been with CURE Ethiopia since 2019, first working part-time before starting full-time in 2021. She completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia from the University of Nairobi in 2022.

As an Anesthesiologist at CURE, Dr. Tirunesh loves that patients and their caretakers get the chance to hear about the gospel and she has the opportunity to show God’s love to the less privileged.

When she’s not helping kids heal, she enjoys taking walks and listening to Bible teachings and gospel music. Dr. Tirunesh is married and has a son and a daughter.

Dr. Tesfaye Mulat

General Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Tesfaye Mulat serves as a General Plastic Surgeon Consultant at CURE Ethiopia with a specialty in burn reconstruction. He attended medical school at Addis Ababa University and Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa before completing a fellowship at the Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway. Once complete, he returned to Ethiopia. Dr. Mulat joined the CURE Ethiopia team as a plastic surgeon in 2015.

Dr. Tihut Teshome

Pediatric Anesthesiologist

Dr. Tihut Teshome serves as the pediatric anesthesiologist at CURE Ethiopia where she delivers anesthesia to each patient going in for surgery. In addition, she assists her team by evaluating, monitoring, and supervising the patient before, during, and after surgery. 

Dr. Tihut studied medicine at Jimma University Hospital and did a three-year residency at the Addis Ababa University School of Medicine. She first came to CURE Ethiopia for a one-month clinical and did her fellowship at Kenyatta National Hospital and CURE Kenya. Dr. Tihut believes in CURE’s mission and is excited to foster spiritual growth. She also loves transforming children’s lives, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Outside of work, Dr. Tihut and her husband have two boys together. She enjoys spending time with her family and enjoying all that life offers. She calls herself a lifelong learner and believes that everyone has a calling.

Dr. Tewodros Tilahun Zerfu

Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Teddy Zerfu has served as an orthopedic surgeon at CURE Ethiopia since January 2013. He conducted his postgraduate orthopedic training with COSECSA in Kijabe, Kenya, and much of his time was spent at CURE Kenya during training. Dr. Zerfu’s passion is children’s orthopedics, and he is very happy to be back serving the children of Ethiopia. He thoroughly enjoys contributing to the orthopedic education in Ethiopia is his passion and what’s made CURE’s teaching and training hospital in Ethiopia the perfect fit for him!

Teddy is married and has two children, a boy and a girl.

Dr. Wubshet Aderaw Workneh

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Wubshet serves as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at CURE Ethiopia, where he evaluates and treats children with musculoskeletal injuries and disabilities, mentors and teaches residents and fellows, and coordinates the prosthetics and orthotics unit at the hospital.

Dr. Wubshet has a degree in medicine and a degree in orthopedics and trauma surgery from Bahir Dar University. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics from CURE in 2021, and he earned a COSECSA (College of Surgeons Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa) fellowship in the same field of study in 2022.

After his fellowship but before starting at CURE Ethiopia in October 2023, Dr. Wubshet worked as a General Practitioner at Bahir Dar University, then as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at Bahir Dar University Hospital, Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital.

When he’s not helping kids heal, Dr. Wubshet enjoys hiking and traveling. He is married to Betelhem, and they have two daughters and a son.

In July of 2007, he had the opportunity to conduct his five-year orthopedic surgery training at CURE Kenya under the COSECSA program. Following completion of his training in 2012, he returned to CURE Ethiopia to begin serving as a consultant orthopedic surgeon.

Dr. Mesfin takes joy in his work helping children who suffer from treatable disabilities. He is married and has three boys.

Dr. Tirunesh Busha Gemechu

Pediatric Anesthesiologist

Dr. Tirunesh serves as a Pediatric Anesthesiologist at CURE Ethiopia where she delivers anesthesia to patients going in for surgery. In addition, she assists her team by evaluating, monitoring, and supervising the patient before, during, and after surgery.

Dr. Tirunesh attended Jimma University where she studied medicine. After graduating as a general medical practitioner, she served for three years at a rural public hospital. She then returned to Jimma’s medical college and completed a residency program in anesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine. She’s been with CURE Ethiopia since 2019, first working part-time before starting full-time in 2021. She completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia from the University of Nairobi in 2022.

As an Anesthesiologist at CURE, Dr. Tirunesh loves that patients and their caretakers get the chance to hear about the gospel and she has the opportunity to show God’s love to the less privileged.

When she’s not helping kids heal, she enjoys taking walks and listening to Bible teachings and gospel music. Dr. Tirunesh is married and has a son and a daughter.

Dr. Tesfaye Mulat

General Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Tesfaye Mulat serves as a General Plastic Surgeon Consultant at CURE Ethiopia with a specialty in burn reconstruction. He attended medical school at Addis Ababa University and Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa before completing a fellowship at the Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway. Once complete, he returned to Ethiopia. Dr. Mulat joined the CURE Ethiopia team as a plastic surgeon in 2015.

Dr. Tim Nunn

Medical Director

Dr. Tim Nunn serves as the Medical Director at CURE Ethiopia where he manages the day-to-day operations of surgery and treatment for patients at the hospital.

Dr. Tim Nunn completed a biblical and intercultural studies course at All Nations Christian College. He trained in Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and completed fellowships in Sheffield, United Kingdom, where he worked as a pediatric orthopedic consultant. Dr. Nunn also worked in South Africa and Kenya before coming to Ethiopia.

He is passionate about helping the most vulnerable children in low-income countries by sharing his skills and knowledge to build the national orthopedic surgical capacity while also sharing the gospel in deed and word.

He and his wife, Rachel, who works as a general practitioner, have three children, Matt, Beka, and Joel. Outside of work, Nunn enjoys working in his tool shed and fishing.

Dr. Tihut Teshome

Pediatric Anesthesiologist

Dr. Tihut Teshome serves as the pediatric anesthesiologist at CURE Ethiopia where she delivers anesthesia to each patient going in for surgery. In addition, she assists her team by evaluating, monitoring, and supervising the patient before, during, and after surgery. 

Dr. Tihut studied medicine at Jimma University Hospital and did a three-year residency at the Addis Ababa University School of Medicine. She first came to CURE Ethiopia for a one-month clinical and did her fellowship at Kenyatta National Hospital and CURE Kenya. Dr. Tihut believes in CURE’s mission and is excited to foster spiritual growth. She also loves transforming children’s lives, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Outside of work, Dr. Tihut and her husband have two boys together. She enjoys spending time with her family and enjoying all that life offers. She calls herself a lifelong learner and believes that everyone has a calling.

Dr. Tewodros Tilahun Zerfu

Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Teddy Zerfu has served as an orthopedic surgeon at CURE Ethiopia since January 2013. He conducted his postgraduate orthopedic training with COSECSA in Kijabe, Kenya, and much of his time was spent at CURE Kenya during training. Dr. Zerfu’s passion is children’s orthopedics, and he is very happy to be back serving the children of Ethiopia. He thoroughly enjoys contributing to the orthopedic education in Ethiopia is his passion and what’s made CURE’s teaching and training hospital in Ethiopia the perfect fit for him!

Teddy is married and has two children, a boy and a girl.

Dr. Wubshet Aderaw Workneh

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Wubshet serves as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at CURE Ethiopia, where he evaluates and treats children with musculoskeletal injuries and disabilities, mentors and teaches residents and fellows, and coordinates the prosthetics and orthotics unit at the hospital.

Dr. Wubshet has a degree in medicine and a degree in orthopedics and trauma surgery from Bahir Dar University. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics from CURE in 2021, and he earned a COSECSA (College of Surgeons Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa) fellowship in the same field of study in 2022.

After his fellowship but before starting at CURE Ethiopia in October 2023, Dr. Wubshet worked as a General Practitioner at Bahir Dar University, then as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at Bahir Dar University Hospital, Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital.

When he’s not helping kids heal, Dr. Wubshet enjoys hiking and traveling. He is married to Betelhem, and they have two daughters and a son.
