“Without healing it will be difficult for him to continue with school. He's already stopped going because of pain in his legs when he walks there” says Mwila's mother Mable.

Shortly after Mwila started walking, he would cry at night because of pain in his legs. As he kept growing, his legs started bending outwards. The local doctors thought it was rickets and said he would get better in time. Sadly that hasn’t been the case. Mable got more and more concerned with his condition and a few years ago she took Mwila to a local health center for another opinion. But still nothing was done.

Over the years, things have just progressively gotten worse for Mwila. The ten year old boy recently stopped going to school because of pain in his legs. When he makes the long walk to school, the pain becomes unbearable. He still plays with his friends but he often returns home early with pain being too much to even continue playing. Sadly, some people in his community do laugh at Mwila and some even mock him that when he standsm, his legs appear as if he is sitting. Thankfully he was identified by a local disability advocate who registered him and facilitated his travel to CURE Zambia. Here he will get the treatment he needs to straighten his legs!

We are happy to see Mwila back for his follow up! The cast on his right leg has been removed, and his leg has been nicely corrected. The doctor decided that Mwila should go back home and get used to walking on his corrected leg. He should come in a couple of months for surgery to correct his left leg. We praise God for his healing so far and looking forward to his next surgery. Thank you for your support and prayers for Mwila! Photo of Mwila

During the cast change yesterday, the doctor upgraded Mwila from a boot cast to a long leg cast on his right leg! This has given him the confidence to start moving around in our wheelchair. Since he won't have access to the wheel chair when he gets back home, our physical therapist has given him a pair of crutches and he is learning how to walk with them! Photo of Mwila

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us" 1 John 5:14. As Mwila was waiting to go into our OR for a cast change, our Spiritual Director Pastor Terence comforted and prayed with Mwila. Pastor first asked Mwila to pray after him then after, Pastor prayed for Mwila. Photo of Mwila

"You should buy me football boots," Mwila told us with a glint in his eye. We asked why he wants us to buy him boots, before he could respond his mother Mable answered, telling us that Mwila loves football very much but he has not been able to be playing because of his legs but now he is looking forward to start playing football with his friends after he gets healed. We are looking forward to his healing as well so that he could begin to do what he loves. Football is the most popular sport in Zambia and it widely played in the country be people of different age groups! Photo of Mwila

Happy Mwila! Today Mwila received a gift basket as an early Christmas present! We held an early Christmas party for kids today. The reason we had it so early is because during the Christmas period, the hospital will be closed and everyone will go home for the holidays. We had to celebrated with these kids before they leave! Medically, Mwila is recovering well. Please keep praying for him! Photo of Mwila

Mwila's surgery was quite intense because it's his femur that is bent (the bone between your knee and hip - also the biggest bone in the body). Thankfully the surgeon managed to correct Mwila's right leg, but to hold the corrected bones together a plate had to be put in during surgery. This surgery just tackled Mwila's right leg and we'll take on his left when he's had a chance to heal up a little. Remember to be praying for Mwila's healing! Photo of Mwila
