“I want to be a teacher when I grow up,” shares Rodgers proudly.

Rodgers is a 12 year old boy who has never had any medical attention for his feet. He was born with clubfoot and it has been a puzzle for his parents due to lack of knowledge that his condition is treatable. This lack of understanding coupled with the long distance to the nearest hospital, Rodgers was left to do the best he could in life with his feet the way they were.

“He can’t wear shoes and when he is walking, the small stones on the road hurt him, making it difficult for him to walk. I want to this to end,” says Francis, Rodgers' father. Francis had seen kids with clubfoot before but never thought his son would be one of them.

Rodgers learned about CURE Zambia through a mobile clinic that was held in a church near their home. Once he was seen by the CURE Zambia staff, he was scheduled for the surgery for which he has now arrived. Please join us in welcoming Rodgers and cheering with him as he starts his healing journey!

Today Rodgers came to our desk to read the messages you have been sending to him, the young man is always delighted to read them. So much so that when he sees us, he automatically asks if any new messages have come in. When he finished reading, we got into a conversation where we asked him his version of what it was like in the OR. His perspective was super interesting! He believes that when he was put to sleep, he stopped breathing and he only started breathing again when he was woken up in the recovery room after surgery. We asked him how come he wasn't scared of not breathing and he said he wasn't scared because he knew that the people in the OR are good and will wake him up again. He even reminded us that next week he is going to the OR again for the cast change and he still isn't scared one bit. We explained to him what really happens, but he refuses to believe us! He's even making some friends! He will still be around for a bit as he'll have to go back to the OR for another cast change, but hopefully he'll be able to go home soon after that. Photo of Rodgers

Rodgers had a cast change today and he was experiencing some new cast discomfort! We invited him to our desk to read for him your get well messages to cheer him up a bit. To our surprise when we asked him if he can read, he said "yes!" We gave him the laptop and he read all your messages himself. As he was reading, we noticed his face was becoming brighter and brighter. We then told him that people sending these messages are from overseas, he asked a question "is it possible that I can see them?" This young man is happy and thankful to read your messages, we promised him that we will be showing him all the messages sent to him everyday, may you continue sending the get well messages to Rodgers! Rodgers had a solid weekend of recovery and is feeling pretty good today! Because of this recovery, he managed to join the rest of the kids in our playroom were he learned the story of Jacob and Esau. The children first watched a cartoon of this Bible story and then Else from our spiritual staff talked through it with them to drive home the key points. After story time, there was the always popular play time! Photo of Rodgers
