We need to raise approximately $1000 to treat children like Bernard. When you give a gift through Bernard's CUREkids profile, your contribution will help us continue our work in countries like Zambia. Have more questions? Ask us.

Monthly Giving: Be a Hero!

When you partner with us monthly, we'll send you an email each month to introduce you to a different child who was helped because of your generosity. "He complains of pain on the leg when he comes back home because of the distance from school," shares Florence, Bernard's mother.

Bernard's disability began about 5 years ago when suddenly his left leg became swollen slightly above the ankle. He was taken to the hospital where his leg was attended to and cleaned. Florence reports that a lot of pus came from the swollen part of the leg and then he was eventually discharged. Shortly after, his leg started becoming a source of discomfort and pain for the young man. Before Bernard and his family could adjust to the growing discomfort of his leg it sadly took a more worrying turn, it started bending a year after it first became swollen. This translated into a number of different hospital visits and numerous medical procedures. even a born was removed at one of the hospitals he was taken to.

Our grade seven pupil has difficulties concentrating on his education because of the condition. “When he goes to school, he complains of pain then comes back home because of the distance from school,” shares Florence. It is clear that he finds it hard to concentrate in class because of the pain in his leg. Bernard is the first born in his family and he is the only one among his siblings to have this condition. What has caused the condition in his leg remains a mystery to the family but we are thankful that they have found their way to CURE Zambia through the generous support of a Catholic priest who informed them about CURE Zambia and assisted them with money for transportation in getting here. We're also thankful for your prayers and support that makes healing for kids like Bernard possible!

"When I put on shoes, the one on the right leg use to bend because of the way the leg was," excitingly shared Bernard who is now comfortably able to put on shoes on both feet. When we showed him his photos, his comment was that, "I didn't know that I looked this good!" The disability had affected the way he use to look at himself and thankfully his healing has helped change his self image. Bernard has been healed and the X ray confirms the healing on the inside of his body too, there is no need to keep him around, we will only require a follow up to see how he is doing after six months. We thank you for your prayers and partnership for Bernard, thank you playing a part in making him realize his self worth through healed feet and the opportunity to learn that he is created in God's image and is His child! Bernard had his surgery! Dr Lastroni did a distal tibial osteotomy and also inserted a wire and staple to hold the leg together. The correction looks good and a fiber glass cast has been put to hold the leg in position. He is currently recovering from surgery, pray for his smooth recovery! Photo of Bernard
