Joseph's Story

“Since Joseph was born and I learnt that he has to be operated. I have been asking God to help him have a successful surgery and be active after the surgery,” Florence says. When she was pregnant she went for all her antenatal appointments and did two ultra sound scans but nothing showed that her unborn child had spina bifida and when he was finally born, Florence says she was in shock and she cried so much. What worried her the most was that she had never seen a child with spina bifida in her life. The nurses at the hospital where Florence gave birth referred her to CURE Uganda and after a week of collecting transport money Florence immediately boarded a matatu to CURE. Her husband is taking care of Joseph’s three siblings back at home. Florence says that she is concerned about Joseph’s future, whether he will be able to walk and go to school like his siblings and every day she prays for God to help him. “We are both peasant farmers but with the little that we earn we shall do our best to give our son the future that he deserves,” Florence said. She has been at CURE Uganda for a week now and is particularly close with one other mom named Fortunate whose baby Kevin also has spina bifida and Florence says that they chat about their kids and their future. We're thankful for the encouragement that friendship brings. Please join us in praying for Kevin's healing!

“They were comforting during the time the child was going to surgery, they have been so helpful and encouraging to me as a mother,” said Florence about the afternoon chapel services. Florence is doing well, however she is still thinking about the day of Joseph’s operation and how scared she was. This morning clinical officer Esther examined Joseph. “Joseph had a fever but it is now down, they are going to check the urine,” said Esther, she continued, “He is not so sick.” Please continue to pray for Joseph that his back will heal and for him to continue to get stronger! “My chest and heart were paining but since they operated my heart has improved,” said Florence. Joseph had a high heart rate during the night but it has calmed down and he is being transferred out of the ICU and back to the ward today. Florence has been seeing improvements in his back with less pus discharge. Today she will be taught how to dress the wound and when they eventually leave, they will be sent with bandages and honey. Please keep Joseph in your prayers that his back will continue to heal and he will recover well from yesterday’s operation. Photo of Joseph

“Praying for God to heal the child and close the wound,” said Florence. Today Joseph got a CT-scan then cerebrospinal fluid was collected from his head to be analyzed as his doctors make a plan. Florence says, the pus discharge has reduced from Joseph’s back and he is receiving IV antibiotics three times a day to combat the infection. Nearly a week since he was discharged from CURE Uganda, Joseph was brought back because of a wound sepsis and dehiscence. According to his mother, for the last three days he has been crying a lot, has had high temperatures and there was a discharge from the wound (surgical site) on his back. He has also developed hydrocephalus according to the diagnosis of our doctors. This morning, Dr. Noah cleaned his wound and he has been put on antibiotics. In the afternoon, a new cannula was placed to receive IV medication. A plan is being made for his surgery for hydrocephalus too. Please be praying for Joseph and his mother Florence. Photo of Joseph

“I thank God for the baby going through the surgery safely,” said Florence. Joseph was irritable and fought a fever during the night but is being transferred to the ward this morning. “The doctors told me the back is fine,” said Florence. Yesterday, after surgery, she called her family to tell them Joseph was out of surgery and nursing. Florence's relatives are now looking forward to them being discharged. "I've been praying a lot, I can pray on my own or in a group with the mothers when we pray for our children,” said Florence. Please join Florence in praying for Joseph to have a successful recovery and to have no future complications. Photo of Joseph

“I feel strong about today’s surgery and I am not worried. For the time I have been here, I have seen children like him (Joseph) have the same operation and I hope that after it is done Joseph will be healed,, Florence says. She hasn’t been able to update her husband about Joseph’s surgery but plans to do so soon. Please lift them up in prayer today as Kevin has his operation! Photo of Joseph
