“Lyka loves to play, dance and most especially draw! She’s now in 2nd grade because she needed to take a break from school for two years because of the burn treatments. My hope is for Lyka to get a full treatment, so she will not be bullied by other kids,” shared Lyka’s dad, Francisco.
”The accident happened after typhoon Yolanda when we didn’t have electricity for four months. A gas lamp spilled on Lyka’s face. We sent her to several local hospitals, but no doctors who know how to treat a 3rd degree burn was available nearby. She was five years old and needed skin grafting, but we didn’t have the financial means to provide for that. It was a long process of healing and her skin contracted,” Francisco shared with us a glimpse of the incident.
Lyka and her family have been through a series of unfortunate events since one of the most powerful typhoons in the Philippines landed in their hometown in 2013. But despite their circumstances, God continues to show up in Lyka’s life as He sends partners and people like you to let Lyka and her family know that God is more powerful than any typhoon.
”It all started when Sir Peter, from Seeds of Dignity, first met Lyka at their school when they were handing out flip flops. Then, they brought us to a mobile clinic locally and were given another opportunity for surgery,” adds Francisco.
Lyka is clearly a papa’s girl and here at Tebow CURE, we get to tell her and Francisco about our heavenly Father’s love for her. We ask that you pray for Lyka and Francisco to encounter the redeeming love of God through healing at CURE Philippines!
Playing outside her room was definitely a treat for Lyka! Since her wounds closed up pretty quickly, she spent most of today switching from the PlayStation to the cooking station. Meanwhile, Francisco packed up, so they could be ready to go. It looks like Lyka is being discharged sooner than we thought and we thank you for praying for her! As Lyka flies back to her hometown, she gets to take home an abundance of encouragement from your Get Well letters! Thank you for sending those her way! Our partners from the Seeds of Dignity will keep track of her progress while she's away, so we pray against infection and healthy healed skin!
After being in a hospital bed for the better part of two weeks, Lyka admits that she’s a bit bored. She was playing on her tablet, and has a large variety of activities to choose from, and a lot of visitors still, but we understand the frustration. Her dressing change went well yesterday, and if everything continues to go as planned, she’ll be discharged on Friday. She’s really been enjoying her Get Well messages, and can never have too many, so feel free to add one to her pile by sending one from below!
"Raise your hands if you're a girl!" Child mentor Ella introduced a story of a girl raised from the dead by Jesus in Luke 8. Lyka and her roommate Jeksa took turns reading from God's word. They both had a restful Easter weekend, but was excited to be back interacting with the staff and learning more about Jesus. Even though Lyka goes back into the OR for another dressing change today, she knows that our God is with her in this journey!
Today’s story time with child mentor Ella came from Luke 17. Lyka heard about the ten men with leprosy who were healed by Jesus but only one of them returned to thank Him. After that, Lyka expressed her thanks to God through prayer for she has been given this opportunity to be healed. She wants to send her “Thank you!” to those who sent her encouraging letters as well! Lyka is up walking, reading, and playing lightly, and has been actually discharged today! Your prayers and support make a huge impact on our kids as they heal!
While waiting for her turn in the OR to get dressing changes today, Lyka heard a story from the book of Mark about a paralytic man who was brought to the feet of Jesus by his friends. She colored the page of that story in her book and was so interested to listen that she also wanted to have faith and be healed like the paralytic man. “I want to thank Jesus for my surgery,” Lyka told us. Through your support, you've become one of Lyka's friends who brought Lyka to “Jesus’ feet” here at CURE.
Lyka had a restful weekend and was extra chatty today! She was too shy at first to show us some of her drawings but Francisco encouraged here to give us a glimpse of her masterpiece. This is a drawing of herself, beautiful just like she is! She’s also ready to get out of the room, which means she’s feeling so much better! The itchiness on her leg went way, thanks to your prayers!
We dropped by to see how Lyka is doing today and saw that she's getting more talkative, which is a good sign! She makes her eyebrows talk for the most part, raising it up and down as she responds "Yes" to our questions. So far, we got eyebrows raised for "Are you feeling better today?" "Did you draw some more today?" "Are you comfortable today?" and many more! She also told us that her leg, where a skin graft was taken, is itchy, so Francisco taps her leg gently to divert the pain. Overall, today was a better day for Lyka, but would you help us pray that for the itchiness and pain to go away?
Lyka got a visitor from our Community Outreach Manager, Josiah, today! Not only did he pray for her healing, but also delivered all of your Get Well letters you sent! It's been hard to move and recover after surgery, but we see Lyka's strength shine through as she tried her best to give us a glimpse of her smile. The visit and your letters showed Lyka and Francisco that they are not alone in this journey, they have God, the staff here at Tebow CURE, and so many people from all over the world praying for them!
Today is Dr. Andrew's turn to draw as he made a sketch around Lyka's neck to start surgery. With all the hospital visits from the past few years, Lyka had a hard time processing that she will be going through surgery again. "I feel bad to see her go through this again, but it needs to be done," shared Francisco as he understands what his daughter is going through. Lyka will go through a long process of healing, especially because this will not be the last time that she's going through surgery. Please pray for her during recovery and patience during healing!
Lyka flew in from another island to get treated here at Tebow CURE! Thanks to our partners from the Seeds of Dignity for providing a plane ticket for Lyka and Francisco, Lyka can now continue with her healing journey and experience God’s love even if it’s far away from home. When Lyka got to her assigned bed in the ward, she immediately drew on the blank pages of her new workbook! Lyka loves to draw and we look forward to seeing some of her artwork as she processes her healing here at Tebow CURE!
