“There are three options of what I want to become when I grow up. First option is to become a chef. Next option is take up medicine. Third, become a volleyball player!” desires Herlen.

Full of dreams in life, Herlen continues to thrive in her academics while she goes through a home study program while she can’t actually attend school physically just yet. “Herlen was born with her condition. Last year around New Years, we saw Herlen drop and fall for no reason. Her knees gave up on her! And then another instance at school, where her knees gave up on her again! She had a group of friends from class that carried her as she fell, but of course, they took a pause to take a selfie and kept going! That’s how I got the call and a picture,” shares Herlen’s mom Helen. “I don’t know if I should be crying or laughing at that moment!” adds Herlen.

Herlen’s knees have been hurting for a while, but she pushes through so she can continue to go to school. She is very determined to accomplish her goals and obviously has a great personality and humor to have awesome friends who stick around with her! Herlen has had two surgeries here at Tebow CURE to stabilize and realign both of her knees. Now, it’s time to get started with her feet since her foot gets imbalanced as she walks. One step at a time, Herlen prays for her healing as she continues on with her journey!

Herlen was down in the OR this morning for a cast change. Nurse Shine's pose showed us that the process was successful and Herlen was ready to head back up to the ward any time soon. We peeked in her room to see how she's doing and it was still dark, which we then found out that she actually has vertigo – the reason why she's been having lightheadedness and headaches. We figured that we will let her rest until she's ready to head home today. Thank you for keeping Herlen in your prayers as she continues to heal at home! Photo of Herlen Mae

We asked Herlen how she's doing and she points to her head to indicate that it's hurting, feeling light headed. No wonder why the room is dark and all the lights are switched off. She says, "I miss my dogs Max and Chloe." On top of that, her foot is in pain, but "just a little," she adds. Regardless of the overall feeling, Herlen always manages to keep a smile on her face, which we love about her. Having a positive attitude towards her healing helps a lot. Please keep your prayers coming! Photo of Herlen Mae

Herlen’s surgery day came quicker than we expected, but she was more than happy to get it done and over with. She was very casual as she came in to the operating room, since this is her fourth trip there. Due to the condition that affected her knees and right foot, her left foot is also slightly turned in, still making it difficult to walk. It was all hands on deck as Dr. Shelley, Dr. Jun, and Dr. Nesti all pitched in to operate on Herlen’s foot to get in the correct position. Please be praying that this latest surgery will be her last for a while! Photo of Herlen Mae

Nothing social media worthy happened today for Herlen, just a plain old follow up. “I haven’t been going to school, and besides short trips, I haven’t been getting out much,” Herlen reported to us this morning. She’s still healing, and while she’s been keeping up on her schoolwork from home, we know she’s anxious to get life back to normal. She’s healing slowly but surely, and has just one more procedure to go, which should happen in a few months. Dr. Jun showed her a few stretches to keep building her leg muscles, and he let her know that before long, she’ll be “walking like Miss Philippines!” Photo of Herlen Mae

Herlen’s a bit of a pro when it comes to follow up appointments, so her cast removal didn’t bother her too much. She reminded us that she’s definitely a teenager, sharing her experience on social media! Photo of Herlen Mae

Not surprisingly, Herlen looks as lovely sleeping peacefully as she does when she's awake! She went down for a cast change this morning, and then she got to head home. We'll see her back for an update soon! Photo of Herlen Mae

Who wakes up looking lovely like this? Herlen does! We tiptoed around the ward so she could get the rest that she needed before heading to physical therapy. Apparently she's a light sleeper who wakes up bright and happy. So as a peace offering for her interrupted sleep, Herlen gets a purple cuddle buddy! Photo of Herlen Mae

"Bye!" waves Herlen to Helen as she goes into the OR. She was tough and brave as she already knew what was about to go down. Herlen possibly has Charcot-Marie-Tooth or CMT disease that has caused her foot deformity. It's progressed on her lower limbs, which means she'll have to work hard to get her strength back. Knowing Herlen and her determination to get to her goals, we don't think that's going to be a problem. Thank you for praying for a successful procedure! Photo of Herlen Mae

Herlen goes through admission for the third time! She's had two surgeries to realign her knees and she's ready to get her foot surgery to stabilize the way she walks. She's familiar with the process, so nothing is new with Herlen. It's a new procedure though, so we continue to pray for her healing! Photo of Herlen Mae
