"She's my third child, but the first one with a lip like this" Ina, Nana Fatchima's mother, tells us with confusion still thick in her voice. After giving birth to and raising two healthy children, Ina was shocked when Nana Fatchima was born with a cleft lip. "I had never seen anything like it before" she says. The confusion about her daughter's lip soon gave way to despair as they had to endure to the silent judgement of those around them. Nigerien culture is one that values conformity and those who are not like everyone else, such as people with disabilities, tend to be cast to the outskirts of society. Thankfully, Ina and Nana Fatchima made the journey to Niger's capital where a passerby noticed Nana's lip and told Ina about the work we do here at CURE Niger. Wasting no time, Ina brought Nana to us and they have now been admitted for surgery. Nana will receive the surgery she needs to correct her lip and will leave with a future wide open and full of possibilities!
Nana Fatchima came for a wound cleaning today to make sure her lip doesn't get infected. Her lip is healing very quickly and she only has a little scab left! We cannot wait to see her when she's all healed!
Nana Fatchima was discharged today! She will be coming back next week to start her regular wound cleanings in order to make sure her new lip doesn't get infected. We are exited that she gets to go home. Her older sister came in yesterday and was amazed by Nana's lip. "I can't wait for her to everyone to see her lip now". her mother said as we chatted before she headed out.
Nana Fatchima is recovering fast! Her mom Ina is very happy to see her daughter's new lip even though it's still a little swollen from her surgery. Please be praying for this pair as they continue to heal up!
Meet Nana Fatchima! She is very shy and she stuck to her mother as we tried to get to know her, but we are super exited she is here. Please pray for her as her story of healing starts here at CURE Niger!
