"We didn't know what we were looking at so we did the only thing we could think of, we went to the hospital." Ousseina's mother tells us of the confusing and scary first days after Ousseina's birth. Ousseina was born with a cleft lip, a condition where the lip is essentially split in half and, in this case, also significantly affecting Oussinea's nose. To make matters more confusing for Ousseina's family, Ousseina is a twin and her sister is completely unaffected by the condition. This brings up questions like "why this child and not the other one?" or "why either of these children at all?" These are questions we don't have answers to, but after the hospital Ousseina's mother had sought out referred them here to us at CURE Niger, these are questions we will struggle through with them. God doesn't always give us all the answers exactly when we want them, but he has provided a way for Ousseina to get her cleft lip treated at our hospital and put us in this family's life to walk alongside them during this difficult time.
A little over a month has passed and little Ousseina is back for her check up. Her lip looks amazing! The doctors agree and say she's in the clear now. They also sat down with Ousseina's mom and taught a few lip massaging techniques in order to help Ousseina as she learns to eat and speak with her new lip!
Ousseina is back for to have her lip cleaned. She showed up with her twin sister Hassana in matching outfits! You can notice she's wriggled out of her splints since we've seen her last, but she is super well behaved and doesn't pick at her stitches at all. Overall, she's healing up just as she should and we're blown away at how different she looks from just one week ago!
Ousseina and her twin sister Hassana are a handful for their mother so their older sister Ramatou has been here helping take care of the twins. She's been a big help in keeping Hassana entertained while Ousseina and their mom are busy with medical things and also simple things like helping to feed the twins and changing diapers. On the medical front, the doctors cleared Ouseeina to go home today! She'll spend the weekend at home and then be back next week to start her lip cleaning regimen. It's tough to keep things clean in Niger, but it's important in order to make sure Ousseina's lip doesn't get infected!
This little lady is healing up quite well from her surgery! She has a little swelling which is completely normal and she's been given arm splints which you can see the nurses putting on her in this photo. The splints keep her from bending her arms which then prevents her from getting her hands near her face and trying to pull out the stitches. She'll keep the splints on for a few days until her new lip isn't so sensitive!
As far as cleft lip surgeries go, Ousseina's was a pretty big one. Dr. Issa was able to get in there though and work his magic to create a new lip for this little lady! She'll unfortunately be a little sore and uncomfortable for the next few days, but she'll be that way with a full lip for the first time in her life! Join us in praising the Lord for this!
Ousseina is pretty sleepy today, but that's ok as she needs all the rest and strength she can get as she prepares for her cleft lip surgery. She's here with her mom and her twin sister so we have no doubt she'll be entertained and loved while she's hanging out with us here at CURE Niger!
