Saadou is a shy young man. He is quiet by nature and distrusting of new people by circumstance. Through patience and determination, we were slowly able to coax out his story, personality, and charming smile! Saadou was burned just one year ago at the beginning of the annual harvest season. During this time of year, the entire family goes out into the fields together to harvest their crops together. Being the youngest of the twelve children, Saadou was left at home each day to help his blind grandmother prepare food for when their hungry family would return. On this particular day, Saadou got too close to the cooking fire and his t-shirt caught on fire. His grandmother, being blind, couldn’t see what had happened although she soon smelled the sickening distinct odor of burning cloth and skin. She called out to Saadou and was able to rip off his flaming shirt when he ran to her. Since there is no hospital in their area, the next days and weeks were incredibly painful and difficult for Saadou. To top things off, Saadou’s burn became infested with maggots. His family tried to treat his pain and keep him clean, both very hard things to do given their circumstances.

“I was so scared for him. He was in so much pain, I feared he would never defeat the maggots and get better.” Saadou’s mother shared sincerely with us. Even months after the burn, Saadou was still in daily pain causing him to drop out of school, further hindering his future potential. Eventually, the burns did heal and the pain did subside slightly. Unfortunately, the burn healed in a way where Saadou’s left arm is essentially melted to his torso. He can’t lift his arm above his stomach. He can’t work. He can’t help around the house. In a single cooking accident, Saadou’s arm and future were instantly robbed from him.

Thankfully, a child from a nearby village had been treated here at CURE Niger and once this child’s father heard about Saadou, he told Saadou’s family of the healing and hope we offer. Saadou has now made it here to our hospital in Niger’s capital city where his burn contractures will be released and he will return home with the functionality of his arm restored!

Saadou came back for his follow up appointment today and he got all his bandages off! He'll need a little physical therapy to get his full range of motion back, but this is the first time he's been able to raise his hand over his head in almost two years!!! Photo of Saadou

Unfortunately Saadou's bandage change process is going on longer than it was originally intended. He had a little mishap few weeks ago where he managed to rip some of newly grown skin while playing at home. In the whole scheme of things, it's not a huge deal, but it means a few more weeks of bandage changes and wounds cleanings to make sure everything heals well and the little accident doesn't jeopardize the whole healing process! It's bandage change time once again. This time, as he was waiting to be called into the bandage change room, Saadou had a visit with Emmanuel from our spiritual staff! They had a good little chat about how he's doing and the Emmanuel got to pray with him. Please be praying that the little seeds God is giving us opportunity to plant take root in Saadou's life! It was a rough bandage change for Saadou today. He has a small infection making these wound cleanings and bandage changes all that more important. Unfortunately, they're also painful and he's fully aware of what's in store for him. There were a lot of tears today and his dad had to hold him down as our nurses did their best to work fast and gently! Photo of Saadou

While waiting for today's bandage change, Saadou managed to snag the much coveted rocking chair to wait in! His surgical wound is healing up nicely and he'll have a doctor's appointment soon to get the official review! Please be praying that everything continues as well as it has been. Photo of Saadou

Another week, another bandage change for Saadou. Our man really doesn't like them, but he knows each one gets him closer to the goal of complete healing! Photo of Saadou

Saadou had another bandage change today. It was a little more intensive than the last one and he had to stick around a little longer. He ended up being here over lunch so we hooked him up with a big plate of rice, vegetable sauce, and meat! When we took this photo we were playing with him and snuck up on him. This is his face realizing we tricked him! Photo of Saadou

Saadou came back for a bandage change today! Medically, he's doing great, but all the work we had put in to winning him over last week had to be reset as he was back to his very shy and quiet self. No worries though, we still love seeing him and will continually make sure he knows just how much we love him! Photo of Saadou

Saadou is feeling better today. Still a little bit sore, but he was up and walking around this morning which was good practice since he got discharged just a little later! He'll be back for regular bandage changes so this is more of a "see you later" than a "goodbye" Photo of Saadou

Our man is resting up today. He's still a little sore from his surgery and, in order to keep his arm separated from his side, he has his wrist secured to the side of the bed. It's not the most fun position, but especially right now, it's important to follow the doctor's orders! Photo of Saadou

Saadou has had his surgery! The doctors were able to separate his arm from his torso in what turned out to be a pretty long surgery. Praise God for the success and please join us in praying for Saadou as he begins the difficult and uncomfortable process of healing which involves keeping his arm and torso continuously separated. Saadou is a shy little guy, but Emmanuel, one of our spiritual staff members, spent some time with him this morning getting to know him and reassuring him about his upcoming surgery! Photo of Saadou
