“She can live now,” Hadiza’s mother tells us with complete sincerity. It’s a concept that’s difficult for us from western cultures to grasp, the margins of life that having a disability relegates you to Nigerien culture. Hadiza was born just like all the other little girls in her village, but disability reared it’s fearful head in the form of a knock knee as she was learning to walk. To Hadiza’s mother, the life Hadiza would have is barely even be fitting to be called a life. Already Hadiza is mocked and excluded and this will only worsen as she grows. She will never marry. She will be dependent on her family her entire life, a burden and a shame. Thankfully, one of our CURE Niger mobile clinics took place in a town near Hadiza’s village and when word got to Hadiza’s mother, she made sure they were there. Hadiza has now made it all the way here to CURE Niger where our medical staff will straighten her knock knee and send her home with her burden lifted. Where there was once death, God has given life! And with you, we are honored to be just a small part of that.
Hadiza was discharged over the holidays and while we miss her, we're glad she has finally got to go home! She'll be back in a few months for her check up and we hope you'll join us in praying for her while she's healing up at home.
Today Hadiza and her friends listened to a Bible story. They were told the story of Daniel when he was in the lion's den. Our pastors explained to them that God has the power to do everything and that if He can save Daniel from a lion, then He can heal them! After that, Hadiza and her friends colored pictures of Daniel in the lion's den.
Hadiza is still shy, but today she opened up a little! She told us that she was feeling better and hopes to see the doctor soon. This morning Hadiza and her mother were welcoming another Fulani family here at CURE Niger, helping them understand how things work. It is good to see patients making other patients feel at home. Please keep Hadiza in your prayers as she continues to heal up.
Hadiza is having fun making puppets with some of our weekly volunteers here at CURE Niger. She is super creative! You may not know what she is thinking because of how quiet she is, but her art sure can speak. Pray for her healing process and that everything may continue going well.
Hadiza's pin came out with no issues yesterday. She'll take the weekend to heal up back at our guesthouse and, Lord willing, she should be able to re-start physical therapy again next week! Emanuel, from our spiritual staff, was able to spend some time talking and praying with Hadiza and her mother before they got discharged this morning!
Unfortunately, we've had a little complication in Hadiza's healing process. During her physical therapy, we found out that one of the pins in her leg has worked itself loose and is causing more pain than it's helping right now. Since we found this out, we've stopped Hadiza's physical therapy and she's going into surgery today to have the problematic pin removed. It'll be a super quick procedure that will get this little lady back on track!
Hadiza and her mom had a check up with the doctor today and they're pleased with how Hadiza has been progressing with her physical therapy! While things are indeed looking good, Hadiza is still not finished and will need to hang around a little longer in order to continue the physical therapy work. Please be praying for strength and comfort for this little lady as she keeps chugging away at this healing process.
Hadiza had another physical therapy appointment today. It still wasn't fun, but it was easier today than it was last week. There were no tears today as Hadiza had to lay in this contraption that slowly applied constant pressure in order to slowly bend her knee!
Our little Hadiza is back for some physical therapy. It's not fun and brings out some tears in Hadiza, but both her and her mom know just how important it is. After Hadiza's new, straight leg being in a cast for so long, it's become a little stiff and needs some help learning how to bend in this new manner and be useful. Without physical therapy, the knee would still be straight, but would be stiff and Hadiza would have a whole new set of problems! Please be praying for courage and strength for our little lady!
Hadiza stopped by for a check up today. Her cast is off and she's walking with a little bit of a limp, but she stopped in with our physical therapist who gave her some exercises to do that will help her knee flexibility and get rid of that limp! The doctor and Hadiza's mom are now having conversations about their family schedule and next steps here with us. We were also able to deliver a bunch of your get well messages to Hadiza which drew out one of her funny little smiles at a time where she was feeling a little overwhelmed with everything going on so thank you for that!
Hadiza had her first follow up appointment and is doing great! She's still complaining of a little pain, but her surgery wound has healed up great. She also got the chance to participate in our CURE Niger fashion show! She had to be pushed by our spiritual staffer Salamatou, but she made it up and down the runway! To top it all off, she was discharged soon after! She'll be back in just over a month for another follow up.
Today we were able to read Hadiza a bunch of your get well messages and this was her face as we were reading them to her! She loved the attention and her mother valued all the kind words and prayers you have all sent. Thank you so much for loving this little soul so well!
Hadiza has spent this week hanging out with her mother and sister and healing up. She's not a super fan of having to sit still with the big cast on and today her big complaint was that her leg was really itchy, but she couldn't scratch it. Please be praying that she stays strong over the next few weeks that this cast has to be on!
We had some guests who donated beanie babies and Hadiza got a little dog to help her on her recovery process! In other news, Hadiza got discharged today! She'll be staying in our patient guest house for a while as she continues to heal up so we'll still be seeing her around.
Hadiza had a fun little visit from our spiritual team this morning! You can see Balki talking to Hadiza here and then outside of the shot is Mantou who is spending some time with Hadiza's mother, Ramatou, who you can see in the background. Balki and Mantou checked in on how they're doing and then were sharing some Bible stories with them. While Hadiza's mother isn't convinced Balki and Mantou are telling the truth, it was a good conversation with lots of laughs and love!
First day after surgery and Hadiza is already back to her silly and playful self albeit a little more constrained with the new cast on her leg. She doesn't seem to be in any significant pain and is just having fun giggling at everyone that walks by her in the ward. Getting this photo was a significant challenge as she kept giggling, hiding behind her hands, and wanting to play with the camera!
Hadiza has had her surgery and is no worse for the wear. The doctors were able to straighten her knock knee and installed a few pins that will keep everything in place. That big curvy object in the photo is the mobile x-ray which allowed the pins to be precisely placed! As Hadiza will now start the healing portion of her time with us, will you pray for her that she has patience and determination?
Hadiza is here and brightening up our day with that beautiful smile of hers! She's a funny mix of curious, silly, and super shy. It's a mix we can't quite get our head around, but we are so incredibly happy she is here with us and we cannot wait to straighten that leg of hers!
