Boubacar's Story

Boubacar is a handsome young man who was the highly anticipated first child of his family. What his parents weren't prepared for was for him to be born with a cleft lip. "I was shocked, but I could not help but love him," Boubacar's mother, Balkissa, tells us. Congratulations and speculations floated around Boubacar's village in equal measure during the days immediately following his birth. His family adopted a strong facade and insisted to everyone who would listen that God would provide for them. It wasn't until a little later when Balkissa and Boubacar made the journey to the nearest health center in order to get Boubacar a birth certificate that they were informed his condition is completely curable. The health center referred the pair here to us at CURE Niger and now that Boubacar is with us, we will cure his cleft lip and send him home a new man!

It's like a switch flipped overnight and Boubacar's personality has started shining through! Both he and his mom joined us in chapel this morning and he was making all sorts of laughs and sounds which we had never heard before! He's also developed a fascination about sticking his tongue out of his mouth which his mom isn't so thrilled with, but we think it's pretty cute. Photo of Boubacar

Boubacar's wounds are recovering nicely. If you look closely though, his lip isn't perfect. His was easily one of the strangest and most difficult cleft lips we've ever seen. It may take another surgery to get it to the point of most other cleft lip repairs, but the doctors are going to wait until he's fully healed from his last surgery to make that call. Boubacar is starting his wound cleaning regimen today! It's not fun, but it is very important! Photo of Boubacar

Our little guy got the go ahead from the doctors and was discharged today! Balkissa is getting more and more excited for Boubacar as he heals up. Since they come from pretty far away, they'll be staying in our patient guest house for a little bit while Boubacar keeps getting regular wound cleanings. We don't want any infection messing with that beautiful face! Photo of Boubacar

Boubacar looks a little better every day! He doesn't seem to be in much pain although he seems to hate the straws in his nostrils! (they're there to make sure the airways don't swell shut during the healing process) Photo of Boubacar

Boubacar's lip will be a little swollen and odd looking for the next few days as his body heals up from the surgery, but it's incredible how different he looks already! His mother, Balkissa, asks that you pray he heals up well. She was expecting him to come out of surgery looking perfect and she's a little skeptical he'll continue to improve. We've explained that he needs time to heal and we've shown her photos of previous patients. It seemed to reassure her a little. We'd mark her down as cautiously hopeful.

Thank you for your prayers. Boubacar's surgery went stunningly well! His cleft lip was a little more on the difficult side as far as cleft lips go, but the doctors did a spectacular job! Our little guy is resting up in the ward now. Photo of Boubacar

Boubacar has been with us for a little bit, but kept having his surgeries delayed due to illness. He is now a shining example of health and we cannot wait to get this cleft lip surgery started! Will you pray with us for expertise on the behalf of his doctors and for strength and patience for his mother? Photo of Boubacar
