“People have told us there is nothing that can be done, but we have struggled against that idea! We want Hamza to grow up strong and to live his life. We will do anything for him,” Hamza’s grandmother states, a fierce glint in her eyes. Hamza was born with several of his fingers fused together and while it has not affected him much in life so far, it delegates him to the sidelines of life due to the strong Nigerien stigmas against those who are different. Hamza’s family took him to a local clinic where they were referred here to us at CURE Niger. Now that Hamza is with us, our medical staff will free his fingers, sending him home with full function and freedom for the future!
With one big smile, Hamza has been declared good to go! He's been discharged, but we'll be seeing him again shortly as he now begins the bandage change and wound cleaning process all over again. It's getting repetitive for this little guy, but he's so close to being done!
The surgery is done and Hamza feels no worse for the wear! He's so happy that he was joking around with one of our doctors this morning who ended up using a sharpie to give him a few little face markings that are common in her tribe.
It's another week, another physical therapy session, and a cast change. In order to save time, the parents take off little casts using a bucket of warm water. Hamza spent the whole time repeating "ruwa zahi" meaning "the water is hot" and laughing! Please keep praying for Hamza's healing journey!
Hamza had his bandages removed and replaced with a cast in order to stretch out his fingers a little bit while also to stop him from getting in there and messing with what the doctors have done! It doesn't seem to bother this happy guy all that much!
Hamza had a bandage change today. While waiting, he managed to escape his grandmother and ran over to our office. Before returning him, we took the opportunity to read him a few of your get well messages!
Our little man's personality is back with those mischievous eyes! He's been discharged today, but the hard work starts now. He'll be back multiple times a week for constant bandage changes and wound dressings. If Hamza doesn't receive the proper after care, the whole surgery could be rendered useless. Thankfully, he's got a responsible and loving Grandmother who we know will have him back for his appointments!
Hamza is back with us for round four! His finish line of having ten fully independent fingers is finally within sight and he is so ready to get this done. Please be praying for this surgery and that he'll stay strong through it all!
The skin graft was a piece of cake for this little guy! A small swatch of skin was taken from Hamza's upper forearm and used to cover up the newly exposed finger areas that were previously joined together. Please pray that the skin graft will heal well!
Hamza is healing up nicely and already running around! The doctors took a look at him and deemed him healthy enough to head on home. We'll be seeing this little guy again shortly for his bandage changes and wound cleanings!
