“The way my feet are makes me unhappy because I cannot work with the rest of my family.” Coming from a family of 15 children, familial bonds are the strongest ones in Youmali’s life. The family lives, plays, and works the family farm together. When one of them is hurting, they all are. Being born with clubfeet meant that while Youmali is part of the family, he cannot contribute the way his brothers and sisters do. He has found ways to chip in, but dreams of the day he can pull his weight. Thankfully, this day is not far away. Youmali's family first heard about CURE through a presentation at a local women’s meeting and immediately made their way to us. Soon, Youmali will be on his feet, free of pain, and fully participating in the rigors of family life!
So after getting his cast last week, Youmali's mom finally worked out their transportation home and he snuck out over the weekend! We should be seeing him again for another follow up at the end of June!
Youmali has got the 'all clear' to go back home, although he probably won't leave until his mom can organize some transportation this weekend! None the less, we sat down and showed him a get well video that one of the CURE U chapters made for him!
Our man got his cast off today and his mom washed off all that bandage fuzz that's been under there for months now. It's looking fresh and clean! The doctor is pleased with the way things are looking and Youmali is hanging out with the physical therapist to learn some ways to make his new foot usable before he goes home!
Youmali was able to figure out a lift home over the weekend and took it! We're sad we didn't get to say goodbye, but we'll see him again in a few weeks for his follow up appointment!
Youmali's surgery went wonderfully! He's currently hanging out in the ward, recovering. He'll be in a little pain and discomfort for a bit, but he's a step closer to literally taking uninhibited steps!
