Gregoire is the youngest of 7 kids, and he’s not attending school yet but really wants to go! He’s not really a new patient at CURE, but rather first came through here in 2011. His case has been the center of a debate, because when he was a baby, he got sick and received an injection. After that, his leg swelled, so his mother took him back to the hospital. He was diagnosed with an infection, and they also discovered he had anemia. Then, he got surgery to try to fix his leg, but it didn’t help.
His mother Kifalba heard about CURE Hospital through a mobile clinic planned by missionaries. When Gregoire came here, our doctor discovered that it may be hard to operate on him because his hip is now dislocated! Gregoire will have surgery soon and we hope it will go smoothly! Welcome back, Gregoire!
Gregoire stopped by for another follow up today and we were able to read him the FLOODS of get well messages you all have been sending him! Thank you for that! The doctors say he's looking good. He does walk with a limp despite the fact that he has his shoe with the height differential compensation. He's been instructed to intentionally walk on that foot as he has a habit of just hopping around on his good leg. We'll see him again in six more months!
Gregoire is all healed up, and has headed home! He'll be returning to us in six months when his two femurs (upper leg bone) will be X-rayed in order to measure the difference between the two. It's a slow, but steady progress!
Gregoire is here and is, indeed, getting that surgery to fuse his growth plate that we talked about in the last status update. It's not a huge surgery, but it'll stop his longer leg from growing as his shorter one catches up. He's calm and seems ready, but please keep him in your prayers as he goes in for the surgery!
Gregoire stopped back in for a follow-up, and is completely healed from his last surgery! It's now time to start addressing the length difference between his two legs. The doctors are putting Gregoire through an observation process to determine the exact length difference, and are considering a surgery where they'll temporarily fuse his growth plate on his longer leg. This would prevent the longer leg from growing any more while the shorter leg catches up. Please pray for the doctors as they make their decisions on the operation, and for Gregoire's healing journey!
Gregoire took part in an art therapy class this week where he made two flowers. One flower was for himself and the other was for his sister who is here with him. The deal was he had to tell his sister something nice when he gave her the flower. He ended up telling her that he was thankful that she brought him here to CURE!
Since Gregoire lives pretty far away and he'll need regular wound cleanings to make sure his leg doesn't get infected where the pins were taken out, he is staying in our guest house. We're definitely happy to still have him around!
Gregoire's pin removal was so quick and painless, he was actually discharged yesterday evening as soon as he was fully awake from the medicine!
Our man Gregoire stopped back in for a check up! The doctor noticed that Gregoire's hip is a little out of place so he ordered 4 cm to be taken off our man's shoe and that he come back in a month to see where things are at!
Grégoire was back today for a check up and he is rocking that shoe he got measured for before he left almost a year ago! His knee does stick out a little and he has some trouble bending it so we're talking with his family about the possibility of another surgery, but, for now, Grégoire has gone on his way home again!
Grégoire had his consultation for an orthopedic shoe yesterday, and he will receive this shoe, but not immediately. The center where he went still has to prepare this 'made to measure' shoe. He was a bit disappointed, but in the meantime, he can go back home and be with his family! Let's keep him in our prayers during this waiting time!
During the consultation, the doctor decided that on Monday, Grégoire will go to a specialized center in Niamey to get an orthopedic shoe which will help him to walk better. He is looking forward to have this new shoe!
Gregoire was happy to go back home after this week at CURE, and we'll see him again in a few weeks, on June 8th! Have safe travels Gregoire, and see you soon!
Gregoire had his third surgery on Monday! The doctors placed a second pin in his right leg, he is now resting and recovering in the ward. He is so brave and always smiling, and his mother is very patient! Keep them in your prayers!
Gregoire went into the operating room yesterday for his second surgery where our doctors placed a pin in his leg. He is now resting in the ward. His mom is anxious because her sweet boy has lost his appetite and hasn't felt well enough to eat. Pray for a quick and smooth recovery for Gregoire!
Now that Gregoire has recovered from his surgery, he is back in his own room to continue the healing! This will take a bit more time. Please keep praying for him as his hip needs to be straightened a little more.
Our little boy struck a pose this morning with Khadija, his little cousin! His mother went home for some time and his aunt came to watch over him, bringing with her this sweet baby girl! Gregoire’s hip still needs to be straightened a bit more, so he will stay longer so that it may be healed completely!
Today, the surgeon had to take the metal pins out of Gregoire’s leg. We’ll wait for his diagnosis about Gregoire’s condition, we don’t know yet if our boy will need to stay longer. We’ll keep you posted!
Today, Gregoire needs to go to the X-ray room so that the surgeon can determine how much more time he needs to stay with us! But, first, the nurse opened his cast in order to see the scar on his hip. Gregoire was so scared by the tool we use to open the cast, but he admitted later that he felt no pain! Scary, but not painful!
Grégoire is well today! This morning, his mother Kifalba went to a devotional, and she says she thanks God for Grégoire’s health and hers. We are thankful that Grégoire’s condition is getting better! Keep praying!
Gregoire came back in the ward today because the medical team will take off his cast and check to see if his hip is healing well. He still has a pin in it and they want to be sure that it hasn’t provoked any infection. Gregoire is so good natured, he’s been here for so many days and he still has a beautiful smile. He’s such an encouragement!
Gregoire and his mother spent a long part of the day outside, sitting under a tree to enjoy some cooler air during the rainy season. Please keep them in your prayers as they will be staying here for a while at the hospital!
Gregoire still needs to rest in the ward. Yesterday, he thought that maybe he would get to go back home soon but the doctor said that he should stay here to be sure he will get the care he needs. We can’t be sure he will receive good care in his town. It’s better for him to stay, so he can heal quicker! Please keep him in your prayers!
Our boy had his cast changed last week, and after the removal of the old cast, there was a wound on his left hip. The doctor checked the X-ray to make sure there wasn't a pin causing it, and then dressed up the wound. Please continue praying for Gregoire's quick recovery.
Gregoire is still cruising along, but unfortunately, his mother Kifalba doesn’t feel well! She had to consult a doctor, and she now has some medicines to take. Please, keep those prayers coming for them!
Gregoire is still resting in the ward, and he can’t really move, because both of his legs are in a huge cast. Thankfully, he received a little toy plane today, so he can play around a little! Keep those prayers coming...he needs the encouragement!
Gregoire had a hard time yesterday when he woke up. His cast made him so uncomfortable, and so the nurses made sure to give him some more medicine to help with the pain and recovery. Today he received a get well card, but as he’s quite loopy, we gave it to his mother Kifalba, who was very happy to receive it on behalf of her son! Please pray for him!
Gregoire had surgery today! His hips weren’t on the same level, so the surgeon put some metal pins in the top of his left leg to realign that hip and achieve a better balance. Now his legs will be more similar in length. Everything went smoothly! Praise God!
Gregoire first came to CURE 4 years ago and now he’s back! The surgery he needs is quite delicate, because his foot need work, but his hip is dislocated on that side. Doctors are deciding the way forward and we’ll keep you updated!
