CURE in Malawi

The picture above is of CURE in Malawi. The doctors, nurses, technicians, cooks, cleaners, and administrators of CURE Malawi are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical and spiritual care to people who, without CURE, couldn't find it and couldn't afford it, just like Tamara. To do that, we're inviting you to partner with us.

We need to raise approximately $2000 for Tamara and kids like her. When you give a gift through Tamara's CUREkids profile, your contribution is designated to an exclusive country fund for CURE's work in Malawi, and those funds can only be used for operational expenses to treat patients in Malawi. Have more questions? Ask us.

Monthly Giving: Be a Hero!

When you partner with us monthly, we'll send you an email each month to introduce you to a different child who was helped because of your generosity. You can choose to follow their updates and send them get well messages. That means that each year, you're a part of helping 12 different children, beginning with Tamara. We call it being a CURE Hero!

A lot of the kids who come to CURE have one surgery and that’s all they need. We’ll see them after surgery for a few months worth of reviews and then they are on their way. There are a few kids, however, who end up having to come back for a second surgery for the same thing on another limb, like clubfoot, or for another problem altogether. Tamara, has been to CURE already for different problems, and is now back again! This kid just can’t get enough of us!

Tamara was born with clubbed feet and she came to CURE to have the surgically corrected. After her casts were taken off, it was discovered that her left knee was bending inward. Because she was so young, the doctors let it go as those types of things have a tendency to correct themselves as children continue to grow. Before it could have time to correct, however, because Tamara broke the same leg and had to visit CURE once again to have an operation to fix it. Now, it turns out that her left leg is bent inward even more than before, so she is coming back for round three at our hospital to have her leg straightened!

Tamara finds it difficult to walk with her condition, as I’m sure you could guess by the looks of her leg. I’m sure all of this takes a toll on her father whom she lives with and who raises her and her four older siblings by himself as their mother died in 2008. I bet her dad can’t wait until Tamara is all patched up and they don’t have to make any more visits to CURE. And though we enjoy having her around, we hope she won’t have to come back after this time either!

Tamara was reviewed by our CURE doctors at her district hospital last week. She is doing fine and smiling, although she stopped and gave us a serious face right when we snapped her photo! Her cast was removed and she is collecting her AFOs today! Her father was advised to come back to their district hospital if there were any problems with the AFOs. Photo of Tamara

Guess who's going home! Tamara is so excited! She lives in Lilongwe, near the facility that makes AFOs (ankle-foot-orthotics). She'll need to have AFOs until she's in her teens, when the feet stop growing, or else her clubfoot could reoccur. Fortunately she won't have to travel far to get the AFOs, like the many kids who don't live nearby. She'll be seen in a couple months in our clinic in Lilongwe and have them arranged then - so we're not sure if we'll be seeing her again here! Please be praying for her as she heals and heads out into the world! We asked her to wave goodbye for you all! We're not sure why she was closing her eyes for the first half of the video - probably an attempt to get a funny photo - but we got her giggling and waving by the end! The YouTube link to the video is https://youtu.be/5hl-_EhK0hg.

Tamara seems a lot cheerier today! She was laughing and giggling - especially when we tickled her! She is super ticklish! We brought her get-well messages yesterday and she wasn't feeling very well so she wasn't very happy, but she appreciated hearing from you all. She told us she's looking forward to going home and celebrating Christmas, and that she wants a doll! Photo of Tamara

Tamara had her tendon transfers yesterday and her surgery went well! She's recovering in the ward now and told us she's in a little bit of pain - please be praying our happy girl returns soon! Yesterday, Dr. Mak took the tendon from the inside of the foot and brought it across so that it will lift up the outside of the foot. Then he drilled a small hole through the bone in the bottom of the foot and brought the tendon through so that when the bone heals it keeps the tendon taut, lifting that side of the foot and keeping it in the correct position. It's a pretty straightforward operation and she'll be going home on Friday! Photo of Tamara

Dec 13, 2016

Tamara's going in for her bilateral tendon transfers today! We caught a photo of Thandy wishing her well before she went over to the waiting area. She's such a cutie! She'll be having her operation later today since there's a couple of surgeries planned before hers, please be praying it goes well and she's not in much pain afterwards. We'll post photos of her operation tomorrow! Photo of Tamara

Tamara is back! We're so happy to see her lovely face again - she looks like she's grown even since we last saw her two months ago. She's here to have bilateral tendon transfers to keep her clubfoot from reoccurring. Please be praying for her as she goes into the operating room tomorrow! Photo of Tamara

Look at this happy girl! Frames-be-gone! She has to deal with casts, but at least now she can go home! She's going home for eight weeks and then will come back for a tendon transfer to keep her clubfoot from reoccurring. Please be praying for her mom, who said she could carry Tamara during that time and that they didn't need a wheelchair - Tamara is a pretty big girl with two heavy casts! Photo of Tamara

Oct 11, 2016

Tamara's just waiting to go into theater to get her frame off today! There's four other kids - Hannah, Alefa, Fanizo, and Violet - who are having their frames off today too! That's a LOT of kids with frames, please be praying for all of them! Most of them have clubfoot and they're all so overjoyed to have them off, much like Tamara! Photo of Tamara

Oct 10, 2016

Look at this face! This is the face of a girl who's going to have her annoying, clunky, painful frames off tomorrow, Tamara is so happy! Please be praying everything goes alright in the OR tomorrow, it's a pretty minor thing to have a frame taken off, but she still might be in pain afterwards. Photo of Tamara

Oct 07, 2016

Tamara is doing great today and her frames will be taken off next week! We brought her some get-well messages from all of you and she said she likes the prayers and she asks for you all to continue to pray for her when she goes back home! Photo of Tamara

Oct 06, 2016

Tamara says she's doing good today, she was watching the Jesus Film earlier and is now in bed looking a bit bored, so we went over to cheer her up. It took us so many tries to get her to smile with her teeth - she likes to flash her pearly whites and then cover her smile as soon as we try to take a picture! We're pretty sure she's doing it on purpose, but we finally got one to show you! Photo of Tamara

Oct 05, 2016

Tamara was chilling outside today, enjoying the cooler weather here in Blantyre this week! Her right foot looks okay, but the left foot has a little further to go, so hopefully she'll be set to have the frames off next week! Photo of Tamara

Oct 04, 2016

Tamara was enjoying watching the Jesus Film with some other kids! She says the past two days the pain in the pin sites has been worse, poor girl. She's still smiling and giggling though, and we're glad the can still laugh! Please pray she'll feel better! Photo of Tamara

Oct 03, 2016

Tamara's being shy today! Every time she showed us her beautiful smile she would giggle and hide behind her paper in the playroom! Silly girl! Unfortunately, Dr. Lubega still thinks her feet need another week before she can have her frames off - much to her disappointment! Please be praying that they'll be ready as soon as possible and that she'll be able to be patient! Photo of Tamara

It's a lazy day today in the ward, most of the kids have gone home and no new kids have come in yet, and Tamara is lazing around watching tv! We didn't imagine it was possible to slouch that much in a wheelchair but she's managing it! She will be having her frame off next week, and we're so excited for her! Photo of Tamara

Sep 29, 2016

We brought Tamara and her mom some get-well messages today! As always, Tamara was brightening up the whole ward with her smile, and told us to tell everyone thanks for the messages! She is currently wearing a dress that her mom and dad bought her from selling tobacco and other farm products and she is so proud of it! Photo of Tamara

Promise, Desire and Tamara were all waiting to have their frame pin sites cleaned this morning! Desire and Tamara are both having their frames off sometime next week, but poor Promise will have his on for a bit longer! Tamara doesn't look very amused at the boys' antics, but she thought the photo was quite funny! Photo of Tamara

Sep 27, 2016

Tamara is doing well and was in the playroom today coloring! Thandy wrote her name at the top of her page for her. Dr. James thinks her feet will be ready to come out of the frames by next week! So exciting! Photo of Tamara

Sep 26, 2016

Tamara is happy today... we took some photos of her and then Desire came over to be a ham for the camera! You can see Tamara in the background - we were trying to photograph her when Desire stepped in! We showed her this photo and she thought it was hilarious! Photo of Tamara

Sep 21, 2016

Thandy spoke to Tamara today and asked her how she was doing! She says there is less pain, and "I'm getting much better, I can see my feet getting corrected!" Thandy thinks she's a bit tired of being in the hospital, even though she didn't say so. It's hard for the kids to stay in bed or in a wheelchair for weeks on end! Please keep praying for her! Photo of Tamara

Sep 20, 2016

We went over to see Tamara this morning and Desire came up and wanted us to take his photo too, so we dragged him over to take a photo with her! These two kids are great fun! They're both dealing with some pretty painful frames though, so you can continue to pray for them! Fortunately, Tamara feels better than yesterday and we even had a dance party (just with arms of course!) and she was laughing quite hard - although that might be because Avanell stopped dancing and tickled her! Photo of Tamara

Sep 19, 2016

Tamara and Rebecca took a photo together today! Poor Tamara isn't feeling very well after her turns - they can be quite painful. Please be praying for her as her feet have a ways to go! Photo of Tamara

Sep 16, 2016

Look at this smile! Sometimes we don't want a kid to leave because their smile just brightens up the whole hospital, and Tamara is one of those kids! We brought her some get-well messages today and she was grinning away! She's excited that her feet are getting straight, so Thandy asked her, "How will that help you?" "Oh, I'll be able to walk to school a lot!" We're so excited she'll be better able to walk to school once her frames and operations are done! Photo of Tamara

Sep 15, 2016

Tamara was in the playroom today, drawing an elephant and a house! She got bored with it a bit quickly and started playing with a bouncy ball - but being stuck in the wheelchair with frames, she needed CKC Avanell to run and retrieve it for her every time! Photo of Tamara

Sep 13, 2016

Tamara was having some pin site care done today in the wound dressings room! She looked way to happy for someone who is having their frame messed with! She was waving and grinning when she saw us - we're glad, since sometimes it can be painful to have pin site care done! Photo of Tamara

Sep 12, 2016

Tamara's doing well today but she's pretty much stuck in bed with her bilateral frames! We're glad she's looking a bit cheerier though! The doctors will start manipulating the frames to move her feet in a couple days, they needed to let her foot settle before they started it. Photo of Tamara

Sep 09, 2016

Tamara's operation yesterday went well, but it was very long! The first frame alone took three hours! The doctors did a small tendon lengthening on both feet first, and then started by putting the frame on the right foot, and then the left one. In the middle of each frame they did a bony operation to release the foot. The frame will slowly be manipulated to bring her feet up into the correct position. Please be praying that she recovers quickly and isn't in pain, she didn't look very happy this morning! Photo of Tamara

Sep 08, 2016

Tamara is going in for her bilateral frame operation today! She'll have big metal contraptions on both feet when the doctors are done, which will slowly manipulate her feet into the right position! This poor girl has had so many operations, but she's still smiling! Please be praying for her operation and recovery today, we'll post a photo collage of her surgery tomorrow! Photo of Tamara

Sep 07, 2016

Tamara was sitting watching some television today! I tried tickling her again but she got a really firm grasp on my hands so I couldn't! She's quite strong! Please be praying for her as she goes for her operation tomorrow - she loves walking around the ward so it might be hard for her to be stuck in bed with frames for a couple weeks! Photo of Tamara

Sep 06, 2016

Tamara is so ticklish and is giggling even after you stop! This fabulous girl is doing well and she is going to have her surgery on Thursday! The spine surgeon got back to us and said she was all set to have frames be put on for her clubfeet. Please be praying it goes smoothly! Photo of Tamara

Sep 05, 2016

Long update for Tamara today! Tamara returned back to us in January for surgery for her clubfoot, but at the time we realized that she needed spine surgery at the local public hospital before she could have her foot operation here at CURE. So she stayed here for several weeks while we arranged her operation at Queens Hospital and sorted everything out. Unfortunately, we didn't update her profile here because last time she was here was in 2013, and her first name was misspelled "Tamala" instead of "Tamara". Name spellings are a bit hit or miss here in Malawi, so stuff like this happens frequently. Don't worry though, she's back now and on a hunch we tried to find her old profile (this one) and managed it! We're going to be calling her Tamara from now on though! Please be praying for her, she needs to be seen by the spine surgeon who did her most recent operation in January before she has bilateral frames for her clubfoot. Photo of Tamara

Tamara was discharged from CURE Malawi and is scheduled for a future follow up appointment on December 2 in Lilongwe at a mobile CURE clinic. She was able to stand and support herself before leaving. The physical therapist encouraged her to try and walk at home. It will take time but when we see her again, she will be mobile. Photo of Tamara

We haven't forgotten about Tamara, the surgeons are still in discussion since the MRI results came back last week. We should know soon when Tamara will be called back to CURE to start her journey.

Nov 05, 2012

Her problems continue...she was back at CURE a few days ago, the doctors requested MRI results before scheduling any surgery. It appears that her hips are abducted and it would do zero good to correct the feet without starting at the hips. Will send update when the MRI results are back. http://bit.ly/U4KwV0 Photo of Tamara

Those little legs look as bendable licorice sticks and it's safe to say that's not how legs are supposed to be. Soon they will be taken care of though so keep her in your thoughts and prayers as the time nears.
