“I just want to go back to school” Ikram tells us shyly.

Ikram's troubles began a few years ago when she was playing with some of her friends and she fell, fracturing her left leg. While in itself, this fracture wasn't a huge deal, it ended up getting infected and eventually killing parts of her femur - the big bone in between the knee and the hip. Over time, the dead bone has essentially festered in there and spread outwards, causing a seeping wound on her outside of her leg. It has even impacted the growth of her left leg, causing it to be much shorter than her right leg. Ikram's family has taken her to multiple hospital, but none of them have been able to help.

Ikram comes from a family of farmers where the ability to help out on the farm is a crucial function of any family member. Due to her condition, Ikram does her best, but she struggles. On top of this, Ikram has had to drop out of school because she can't make the long walk to and from school every day. “I was in first grade when I had to quit school. I tried to start again, but I always got tired after walking for a bit and couldn’t continue” Ikram admitted.

Thankfully, Ikram has now found us here at CURE Ethiopia where we will be able to remove the dead bone from her leg, getting her one step closer to once again walking with ease and going back to school!

Ikram came back for her doctors appointment and she is doing great! She told us she has been walking with her crutches for the past couple of weeks, but her right leg is still a bit longer than her left. To help minimize the discrepancy, she will have another operation that will slow down the growth of her right leg so the left one can catch up. Ikram's operation went well! She had a femur sequestrectomy, which just means her surgeon removed the dead bone from the upper part of her left leg. Now that the dead sections of bone are gone, this should stop the pus that has been seeping out of the sore on her leg, allowing the sore to heal and her bone to continue growing healthily! Please keep her in your prayers as she now begins the hard work of recovering! Photo of Ikram
