Abrham is an outgoing and joyful young man who's personality defies the odds. When Abrham was just a toddler, he was involved in an unfortunate cooking accident where his left hand and arm were badly burned. As a result, his fingers are much shorter than they should be and his wrist is permanently bent with melted skin holding it in this position. A condition such as this continually draws sideways glances as Abrham is out and whispered rumors follow him around. A lot of kids in Abrham's situation often retreat within themselves and can understandably find themselves angry at the world. But Abrham is not this way at all. His smile shines and he is constantly making new friends everywhere he goes. It's a testament to the love of his family and it is also thanks to them that he has ended up here at CURE Ethiopia where he will get the surgery he needs to straighten out his wrist and live a life uninhibited!
Abrham came back for his check-up today and his wrist is healing great! Dr. Tesfaye taught him some exercises to increase the flexibility of his wrist and he'll practice these at home. Dr. Tesfaye also said Abrham doesn't need to come back for his next check up for a couple of weeks meaning it'll be a while until we see this little guy again. Please be praying for him while he's home, that he continues to heal and he stays diligent with his exercises!
Abrham stopped back here at CURE Ethiopia to get some pesky pins removed from his fingers! The pins had been put in during his surgery in order to keep his fingers from bending as they healed. Abrham is now in the clear and can hold his fingers straight without the pins, so it was time for them to come out. He did have a hard cast put on his hand and then was sent on his way again. He'll continue healing up at home and we'll check in on him next week when he comes back for another follow up!
Abrham came back for his first check up after his surgery earlier this week! His surgical wounds are healing up nicely and Dr. Tesfaye hooked him up with a hand splint which will keep his fingers and wrist in the proper position to give Abrham the best healing possible!
Abrham's surgery went super well! Dr. Tesfaye successfully released Abrham's fingers and cleared out the webbings between a few of Abrham's fingers. Since Abrham lives pretty close to CURE Ethiopia and the surgery wasn't a massively invasive one, Abrham had special permission to go home the same day as his surgery. The one stipulation the OR staff had was he had to be able to keep down food before he left so Abrham got a nice big lunch from the CURE Ethiopia kitchen and had a little post-op feast of injera (the staple Ethiopian food) and tea with his mom!
So it is time for Abrham's next small step in his treatment process! He's come back to get the a few of his fingers separated. After he was burned, some of the skin on his hand healed over the space between his fingers meaning he can no longer use the fingers individually. Please pray for him as he settles in and gets ready for this second surgery!
Abrham came back for his check up today! The doctors say he's healing up really well and they gave him a smaller bandage which he was all smiles about. Already you can see how much straighter his wrist is!
Abrham was back on his feet and making new friends around the hospital only a few hours after his surgery which is an incredible accomplishment as most kids are down and out for at least a day after a surgery. His mom still wasn't feeling well so, based on how well Abrham was doing and his mom's request, the doctors discharged Abrham late last night. We'll see him again when he comes back soon for a bandage change!
Dr. Tesfaye and Dr. Million, a CURE Ethiopia resident, have completed Abrham's surgery! They released the burn contracture on Abrham's wrist and applied a skin graft they took from his forearm. If you want a closer look at the surgery, you can zoom in on Dr. Million's glasses to see it! Please be praying for Abrham as he starts his recovery.
Abrham is here at CURE Ethiopia getting ready for his surgery to release the burn contractures and straighten his wrist! While he's pretty excited about the whole ordeal, his mom is feeling so hot. Please be praying both for Abrham as he gets ready for surgery and for his mom as she looks out for both him and herself.
