“I want to be a doctor so that I can heal people!” says little Zahara.

Zahara is a friendly little girl who has come to CURE Ethiopia with her mother Kedija seeking help for her deformed leg. The family doesn’t know the exact cause of Zahara's deformity, but when she was fifteen months old the family began to see a swelling on her right leg. Unsure what to do, they took her to see a traditional healer. When that didn't work, they finally relented and scrounged up the cash to go to their local hospital. “The hospital we went to, told us the bone was infected and she had to have an operation there” Kedija told us and continued, “but her leg didn’t heal, instead it got worse." The hospital was out of their depth in treating Zahara. Thankfully, they were aware of their limitations and refered Zahara and Kedija here to us at CURE Ethiopia.

Zahara lives with her parents and older sister. According to her mother, Zahara is an active child as she plays with her sister and neighbors “I used to send her to school with her older sister but, I stopped when her leg problem got worse”. Kedija told us. Join us welcoming this sweet child while she starts her healing journey!

Today Zahara and most of the children in the ward were outside on a few extra mattresses we pulled out so everyone could enjoy the gorgeous weather as we did some physical therapy! Zahra was the one trusted to count numbers (1 to 10) for everyone as we held our different exercises. She started by missing a couple of numbers but she soon got the hang of it! Photo of Zahara

Take a little look into Zahara's surgery! It went well and she did great in the operation room. She had a small piece of bone transferred from her left leg to her right leg and a frame put on to hold it all together. The frame will also help her walk without any support and minimize the discrepancy between the left and right leg. She is doing well, but please still keep her in your prayers for a speedy recovery!
