Dr. Rick Gardner

Chief Medical Officer / Medical, Zimbabwe

Rick Gardner serves as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for CURE International and the Medical Director at CURE Ethiopia. As CMO, Dr. Gardner engages regularly with the Medical Directors of each CURE hospital and is an active participant on the CURE Executive Leadership Team.

He completed his surgical training in the UK and spent his fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children, in Toronto, Canada. His first introduction to CURE was in 2009 as a surgical fellow at CURE Malawi. Seeing the burden of childhood disability firsthand in Sub-Saharan Africa and the impact that CURE was having in the country were instrumental in his move to Ethiopia. He has served at CURE Ethiopia since September 2013, both as a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and as the Medical Director.

Dr. Gardner is married to Anne, a microfinance consultant, and they have three children.

John Maphosa

Nursing Manager / Zimbabwe

John serves as the Nursing Manager at the CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe. In this role, he manages the nursing department, including overseeing the nursing personnel, patient care, as well as administrative tasks. He is currently completing a Masters of Business Leadership and holds three undergraduate degrees: BSc Honours in Nursing (Management/Admin), Bachelors in Business Management and Information Technology (Honours), BSc Special Honours in Monitoring and Evaluation, RMN, RGN, Dip in Missions.  Outside of work, John spends his time doing pastoral activities at his local Church.  John is married and blessed with four children.

Dr. Collen Msasnure

Doctor in Charge / Medical, Zimbabwe

Dr. Collen serves as the Doctor in Charge at CURE Zimbabwe. Dr. Collen graduated from the University of Zimbabwe with a MBChB in 1995 and completed his surgical training in Zimbabwe. He is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa, and has been the Head of Orthopedics for United Bulawayo Central Hospitals for the past 15 years. Dr. Collen is the current president of the Zimbabwe Orthopaedic Association and sits on the Board of Trustees for the Zimbabwe Orthopaedic Trust. He also is a part-time lecturer at the National University of Science and Technology Medical School.

Dr. Collen has 10 years of experience running a hospital as a Doctor in Charge, and he participated in setting up CURE Zimbabwe.

He is married to Mercy and both are lay pastors under the leadership of Pastor Thomas Patrick Deuschle of Celebration Church International.

Jorum Mugari

Spiritual Director / Spiritual Ministry, Zimbabwe

Jorum serves as the Spiritual Director at CURE Zimbabwe. In this role, he proclaims the gospel to the children attended to by the hospital and their families. He also conducts spiritual services and activities at the hospital including corporate and individual devotions, coordinating volunteer programs and their supervision, community outreaches, and community engagement programs.

Jorum has an undergraduate MDiv. and Honours in Missiology from the Theological College of Zimbabwe, and an MPhil. from Queens University and Union College in Northern Ireland. Jorum has also completed an Advanced Biblical Hebrew Hons. with the linguistics department of the University of Free State SA. Jorum has experience working with children through Scripture Union Zimbabwe. He has served as a full-time lecturer at the Theological College of Zimbabwe an Affiliate of Zimbabwe Open University. Jorum is also an active ruling elder with the Presbytery of Bulawayo Zimbabwe. Jorum is convinced that God-honoring praxis comes from a correct biblically saturated thinking.

Jorum is married to Evah Mugari and has a daughter, Roseanne Gamuchirai Mugari (17), and a son, Adrian Njabulo Mugari (15). As a family, they enjoy the company of others, wildlife, and traveling.

Jonathan Simpson

Executive Director / Zimbabwe

Jonathan serves as CURE Zimbabwe’s Executive Director. In this role, he maintains overall accountability for the operational, financial, and clinical health of the hospital, as well as related programs within the country.

Jonathan has a postgraduate degree in Geographical Spatial Development and 13 years of experience within the non-profit sector.  He has worked as Tearfund’s Design Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor for Southern and East Africa, Tearfund’s ECHO Project Manager, and World Vision’s Zimbabwe Program Information Officer.

Jonathan believes in the necessity of addressing people’s needs in a holistic way – spiritually and physically, and he is grateful to work at an organization with holistic healing as their mission statement. Jonathan was born in Zimbabwe and loves his country. The opening of CURE Zimbabwe will bring hope and much-needed healthcare to the nation, he is thrilled to be a part of it.

He is married to Katherine and has two sons, Peter and Richard. As a family, they love spending time in the beauty of Africa’s wilderness, camping, and enjoying the outdoors whenever possible.

Tapiwa Tapererwa

Head of Finance / Zimbabwe

Tapiwa Tapererwa serves as the Head of Finance at CURE Zimbabwe. In this position, he oversees hospital financial planning, reporting, control, and essentially makes sure that every dollar donated is used for the maximum benefit of the intended Zimbabwean children.

Tapiwa worked for 12 years in the corporate world as an Audit trainee, Audit Senior, Group Accountant, Senior Accountant and Finance Manager for a diverse number of thriving corporate organizations.

Tapiwa holds a Masters in Professional Accountancy from the University of London, a Bachelor of Accountancy Honours degree from the University of Zimbabwe and is currently studying for a Masters in Strategic Management with the Great Zimbabwe University. He is also a Chartered Certified Accountant who is a member in good standing of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants [ACCA].

Tapiwa is happily married to Fortune, a Horticulturalist, and they are blessed with two children, Matipa and Mayita. He also serves as a Youth Pastor at his local church.
