Honey or Sugar?
The Affect on Wound Healing
In this study, researchers investigate whether there is a difference between the efficacy of honey and sugar and wound dressings in reducing bacterial contamination and promoting wound healing.Positive wound cultures were found in 23% of the honey group and 39% of the sugar group after one week of treatment. After three weeks of treatment, 86 percent of honey-treated patients reported no pain when changing their dressings, compared to 72 percent of sugar-treated patients. Honey appears to be more successful than sugar at preventing bacterial contamination and encouraging wound healing, as well as being slightly less uncomfortable during dressing changes and motion.
