John is in school and currently in fourth grade, but he is often left behind by friends. “When going to school, he walks slow, and his friends would leave him behind. It is worse when it rains,” John's grandmother Benadeti says. “I feel sad and pity for him.”
As expected for a boy of his age, John does some house chores. However, they are limited because he can’t stand for a long time. John’s visit to the CURE Children's Hospital of Zambia this year was the first time he had been to a health facility to receive treatment for his condition. However, this visit was met with resistance from members of their community. Benadeti was highly discouraged to come to CURE Zambia. “As we were planning to come here, people in the community were saying that even if you are taking him to the hospital, nothing will be done for him. His legs will even be worse. But I insisted that I will take him. After he had his first surgery and we went back home, those who were doubting were feeling shy when they saw his leg,” Benadeti told us.
John was identified through a mobile clinic near a church where they live. John had his first surgery on his right foot earlier this year, and it has healed! This excited Benadeti. “I am very happy, and very thankful for his healing so far,” she said. Benadeti is looking forward to the next surgery. She told us, “I don’t even mind staying in the hospital this time around because the hospitality is good, and we have been feed and kept well. I am willing to wait until his leg is healed.”
John met up with his friend Levison today. They went to our play outside near our children's ward and found the swing. Through his stay with us, John is making new friends which makes his time with us even better. Thank you for your prayers for John!
"Take a photo of us with with John on the bed. I want it printed so that I can go with a snap (photo) back home. I want to show his mother how well we are being looked after here at hospital," said Benadeti John's grandmother who brought him to the hospital.
John is coping well as he is recovering from his surgery! He spent most of his day in bed with his foot elevated to prevent swelling. We hope by tomorrow he will be able to move around so that he can join his friends in our playroom. Though he is not missing out on too many playroom activities because child mentor Lillian is bringing him some work to do on his bed! Pray for John's comfort!
John already has one surgery under his belt, so he was a pro going into this second surgery. This surgery worked on John's left foot and it was a success! Please continue praying for John's comfort and healing as we start on this road to recovery.
One leg healed, one more to go! John is ready for his second surgery to correct his left leg. He had his first surgery on his right leg earlier this year. He is happy with his right leg, and we can only imagine how happy he will be when the left is also healed! Join us in praying for John's second surgery and his recovery afterward.
