“My leg hurts when I walk a long distance, and I easily fall when walking,” says Monica.

Monica was born without any disability, but when she was four years old, she started to feel pain in her legs. After a couple of months, the pain on the left leg stopped while it persisted on the right leg. Years later, it graduated from just being a mere pain to actually causing the bending of her right foot. Her right foot slowly started bending when she was around eight years old. Now, she is 14 and still dealing with this condition.

The bending of her right foot is something that Monica has learned to live with, though it comes with a lot of limitations. She is only able to walk short distances because her leg begins to hurt and she is prone to falling. There is also a limitation to the types of shoes she can wear and is not able to participate in many activities with her friends, which makes her feel left out.

Monica aspires to be a nurse. Thankfully, her family heard about CURE Zambia from a local hospital where she was taken for treatment. The hospital referred her to CURE Zambia, and they came late last year. She was scheduled to come for surgery in January 2021, and she is about to begin her healing journey.

We couldn't be there to witness Monica's surgery in the operating room, but we know that the surgery went well. We asked her how the experience was and she said it wasn't traumatic. A posterior release was done, to release the part of the foot which was causing the bending, and a cast will hold the correction in place! Photo of Monica

Meet Monica! She has equinus of the right foot, which developed when she was eight years old. Equinus is a condition in which the upward bending motion of the ankle joint is limited. Thankfully, she has made it to CURE Zambia and is about to have surgery to correct her right leg so that can start to walk freely. Please remember Monica in your prayers! Photo of Monica
