CURE in Zambia

The picture above is of CURE in Zambia. Everyone who serves with CURE in Zambia, from medical professionals to office staff, are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical and spiritual care to people who, without CURE, couldn't find it and couldn't afford it, just like Esther. To do that, we're inviting you to partner with us.

We need to raise approximately $1000 to treat children like Esther. When you give a gift through Esther's CUREkids profile, your contribution will help us continue our work in countries like Zambia. Have more questions? Ask us.

Monthly Giving: Be a Hero!

When you partner with us monthly, we'll send you an email each month to introduce you to a different child who was helped because of your generosity. You can choose to follow their updates and send them get well messages. That means that each year, you're a part of helping 12 different children, beginning with Esther. We call it being a CURE Hero!

“After she was born, the nurse showed her to me and asked me how she looks. All I could say was 'my daughter was born with an open mouth.' I was devastated.” Esther's mother Annetie remembers.

Esther was born with a bilateral cleft lip, a condition where her lip didn't form properly in the womb and has two slits (or clefts) up to her nose. This makes eating, and eventually talking, difficult besides physically differentiating her from all the other children. Esther and Annetie were originally sent to a nearby general hospital, but were turned away and told the specialist who might be able to treat Esther was not there at the moment and they had no idea when he would be back. Specialist doctors in Zambia often travel from hospital to hospital as they are in high demand.

At home, life hasn't been easy for Esther or her family. Raising Esther has been a rollercoaster of emotional challenges for both Annetie and her husband. Annetie has received both mockery and discouragement from her community, but she has chosen to remain strong, “I don’t hide Esther because that's how God created her" referencing how many children with disabilities are often hid away from the public eye due to the cultural shame associated with disability.

After waiting for months and months with no word on this specialist surgeon, Annetie began to give up hope. Thankfully at this same time is when one of Annetie's neighbors heard about us here at CURE Zambia and suggested Annetie and Esther come to us. Now that Esther is with us, our surgeons will be able to repair Esthers lip and send her home with a closed mouth and a new smile!
