“She use to crawl all along and she even started walking a little in May this year,” shares Alice's mother Mary.

Alice was born with clubfoot. Mary tells us that it was the first time they had seen such a condition on either side of the family. Mary says after discovering her child was born with a disability, there wasn't anything she could do about it so she just accepted Alice's condition and thanked God for giving her a child at all. When Alice was three months old, she was taken to a local hospital where she received some treatment, but nothing that helped correct her feet.

The biggest effect Alice's clubfoot has had on her life is that it has taken her three years to learn to walk. While most children were standing up and toddling around, Alice was still relegated to crawling on the floor. When it was time to go places, Mary had to load Alice up on her back, as is traditional for babies in Zambia, but Alice was no baby anymore. She was heavy and Mary bent under the constant burden, both physical and emotional. It was an answer to prayer when, a few months ago, Alice did begin to stand and walk, but her family still worries about her future with a disability like clubfoot.

Some weeks ago, Alice’s mother came to visit her grandmother in Zambia's capital city. It was here she met another woman with a child who had been born with clubfoot. This child is currently clubfoot free because he was treated here at CURE Zambia. The chance encounter encouraged Mary to bring Alice to CURE Zambia for treatment. When Mary went back home, she informed her husband about CURE Zambia and they made arrangements to bring Alice here. Alice has been admitted to our ward and scheduled to have surgery soon. Please be praying for Alice’s healing!

Alice has been discharged! During the doctor's round this morning, they said she was well enough to go and they agreed when she comes back in a few weeks, she will have surgery on the left leg as well as a cast change on her right leg which already had surgery. Be praying for Alice's healing as they stick around in Lusaka at a relative's place until their next follow up appointment in a few weeks! Photo of Alice

Over the weekend, Dr. Maweja decided to put Alice's left leg on a progressive casting treatment which will help to start straightening her foot even before she gets surgery on it! Basically, she'll be getting a series of casts over the next few weeks and each cast will gradually bend her foot a little more towards straight. Assuming all goes as planned, this procedure will make her next surgery significantly easier! As for her foot that has already received surgery, Alice will have a dressing change later this week! Alice seems to be recovering well post-op! Mary, her mother, tells us that Alice kept on questioning her after surgery why she brought her here, in a daze waking up from the sleeping drugs. Now that she has stabilized, she has stopped asking these questions. Please be praying for Alice's comfort and healing! Photo of Alice

Alice had surgery today! Dr. Moyo did PMR on Alice's right clubfoot which was more severe. In order to lessen the healing burden, he opted to start with one foot and once it's healed, we'll attack the second. The operation was successful and Alice is is recovering in the ward. Please be be praying for Alice as she now has the hard work of healing to do. Photo of Alice
