"Those who laugh at me are many. They say, 'look at the way he is walking' and when they say that I feel bad," shares Emmanuel.

Emmanuel is the first born in his family of four and is from the Northern part of country. He has struggled with equinus in his right leg, a condition which has made him a victim of a ridicule and mockery. His mother Josephine reports that Emmanuel was born without any disability in his leg, and as he was growing he achieved all the child growth milestones with ease. It so happened when he was a year and some months old, when was due to receive a vaccination through injection, that's when the problem with his leg was triggered. His mother tells us that she suspects that he wasn’t properly injected when they were giving him the vaccination. They noticed that he started limping when walking and then his whole leg became abnormally swollen for some time. “He was born just fine, the problem started when he was about a year old, during a clinic there was an injection. They didn't inject him properly, the leg started bending,” shareed Josephine Emmanuel.

Sadly, on that side of the country nothing could be done to curb the unfortunate increase in bending of Emmanuel’s leg. Despite his leg being bent, he used to manage to put on shoes, but now that his leg has gotten worse, he is currently unable to put a shoe on. Josephine narrates that from the time his leg started bending he has never received any medical attention for the condition.

Emmanuel, who is in grade nine, expresses the pain he has experienced both physical and emotionally as a result of his physical disability. The leg pains when he walks long distances and he can’t walk fast and is therefore late for school most of the time. His schoolmates mock him, “some say we can’t be playing with him, look at how he walks. This pain me,” shares Emmanuel. Their prayer was finally answered when they heard on local radio that a team from CURE Zambia would be visiting their area for a mobile clinic to attend to children with different kinds of disabilities. At the clinic, Emmanuel was seen and booked to come for surgery. They came through earlier this year but there were advised to go back home and wait until he could finish school and come during the holidays. They are here and his mother is full of gratitude to the service they have already received, “I am thankful that we have been received well and I believe that that Emmanuel will be healed!” We invite you to be a part of Emmanuel's healing through your prayers and support!

Emmanuel was supposed to have a dressing change of the cast today, but since tomorrow is a public holiday in Zambia where we will be celebrating Labor Day, we decided that it is better the dressing change be done on Thursday or Friday. After that he will be free to go home! He was looking forward to going in the operating theatre and briefly waited at the waiting bay but he was quickly informed about the new development and headed back to the ward. Please continue to keep him in your prayers for patience and healing! Photo of Emmanuel
