“I was worried because I did not know what to do with her legs, I was even thinking of selling a piece of land in order to raise transport money to cross over to a neighboring country were I heard through the radio that conditions like hers would be treated,” shared Annie, Regina's mother.
Regina lives on an Island on the lake which borders Zambia and Congo. Her mother tells us that when Regina started walking when she was still very young as she grew, her legs started bending to the outside. Her family ignored it because they thought that her legs would eventually get better over time, unfortunately, their assumption turned out to be wrong.
Regina complains of pain in her legs especially when she walks a long distance. Sadly this is not the only type of pain she experiences, there is also emotional pain which is a result of people on the island sometimes laughing at her condition. Annie tells us that they sometimes call her “chimagobe” - a person with bent legs. It so happened that her mother Annie was visiting a nearby district and she attended a church service where an announcement was made that there would be a team from CURE Zambia who will be looking at kids with various forms of disabilities. Annie took the announcement to heart and saw it as the perfect opportunity for her daughter to get the much needed treatment. In the midst of various discouraging voices from members of her community who don't believe that such conditions can be healed, when the date reached for the mobile clinic they came and Regina was booked to come to CURE Zambia for surgery. A few weeks later after the clinic, they have made their way here! Annie is thankful to God that her daughter is finally here, “I thank God that my child is on the program to be treated. Through this, she will find peace.“
Regina got herself discharged! After Regina was discharged in December late last year, her mother opted to stay in Lusaka at a relative's place while waiting for the follow up review. It will be the first time she will be going back home to her village after surgery. This will be exciting because she is going back with a different physical appearance, the abnormal bending of her legs when she left have now been corrected through surgery! The attention she use to get when walking because of how her legs looked will be a thing of the past, thank you for being a part of changing the trajectory of her story! We will see how she's doing in six months when she comes back for surgery, until then, we are so thankful for your prayers and support for Regina's healing!
Regina has started covering longer distances in walking! Sometimes she even moves with one crutch. She still remains determined and continuously makes efforts to improve. We're inspired! Please be praying for Regina's strength!
Regina is a strong girl! Today is day three from the time she started physical therapy and impressively she is able to walk on crutches all on her own! Our girl is very determined, pray for strength as she pushes through the physical therapy, with her level of determination she will soon start walking without the crutches!
They have been practicing what they were shown yesterday during their physical therapy session. Regina was walking in our corridor and Annie her mother was supporting her from behind. Please continue to pray for strength as she does her physical therapy!
Our sweet girl Regina, is back with good results! The casts have been removed, both look good and the X ray confirms the healing, much to the excitement of Annie her mother. She will be with us for a couple of days for physiotherapy sessions, thank you for your partnership and prayers for Regina!
Our girl is still recovering! A post surgery X ray was taken and the correction looks good for both legs, the only thing remaining is the healing which will take a couple of of weeks to be complete. Please be praying for her speedy healing! Regina will be going home for the holidays and she will be back for her follow up review next month!
Meet Regina, our sweet girl from the far north of Zambia! She has bowed legs but thankfully Regina has received surgery on both and is recovering relatively well after her surgery, please be praying for Regina's healing!
